Description
In the second Yu Yu Hakusho theatrical film, Poppy, whose Japanese name is Hinageshi, is a film-exclusive character who appears only in this movie. She is a diminutive young woman with vibrant red-orange hair and green eyes, and one distinctive lock of her hair stands up at an angle. Her clothing reflects her calling: she wears a traditional Shinto priestess outfit with a white upper garment, a red hakama, and red sandals over white socks. Her name, Hinageshi, is the Japanese word for the poppy flower, which is reflected in the name Poppy.

Poppy's background ties her to the Spirit World. She was originally a resident of that realm and at one time worked as a secretary to Koenma. After committing a mistake during her service, she was sent to the human world to serve as a shrine maiden at a local shrine, working in a lower-ranking position as a form of atonement. She is also a childhood friend of Botan, the Spirit World's ferrywoman, a connection that becomes important when the story begins.

In the film, Poppy introduces herself as a self-proclaimed guide to the Spirit World, and it is this knowledge and sense of duty that drive her involvement in the plot. When the Spirit World is struck by a great flood caused by the Netherworld, a banished fourth plane of existence, Botan is wounded while carrying a sealed treasure and tells Yusuke Urameshi to seek out Poppy. Yusuke and Kazuma Kuwabara find Poppy under attack by Netherworld demons, rescue her, and bring her to Genkai's temple. Poppy then explains the nature of the crisis and tells the group that they must travel to five locations on Earth that hold concentrated spiritual energy, known as the spiritual gates, in order to restore the Spirit World and stop the Netherworld's return. Her guidance sets the group's mission in motion, and she accompanies Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei as they travel toward the Netherworld king Yakumo's stronghold.

Poppy's motivations are loyalty to the Spirit World and concern for her friend Botan, who is kidnapped by Yakumo's forces. Although she is not a combatant and demonstrates no fighting abilities, she is willing to put herself in danger despite lacking combat skills. In the final confrontation, she attempts to take the Power Sphere, the source of the Netherworld's energy, away from Yakumo, although her effort is unsuccessful. Rather than physical power, her strengths are her spiritual knowledge, her familiarity with Spirit World affairs, and her understanding of the Netherworld, which make her the group's guide and the source of the mission's purpose.

Because Poppy exists only within this movie, her development is limited to the film's own events. She begins as an informant who explains the supernatural threat and ends as a participant in the final fight, and she is present with the other characters in the aftermath when Botan recovers. Her key relationships are with Botan, her childhood friend, and with Yusuke and his companions, whom she assists throughout the crisis, while her former position as Koenma's secretary connects her to the Spirit World's leadership.
