Description
Garev-Sama serves as the primary antagonist in the anime film Slayers Return. He is depicted as a powerful warrior priest aligned with the forces of the Mazoku, the demonic race native to the Slayers universe. Specifically, he is a devoted servant of the Dark Lord Gaav, who perished in the ancient war for the fate of the world, and his actions are driven by a desire to resurrect his fallen master.
In terms of personality, Garev is characterized by a solemn and fanatical devotion to his cause. He carries himself with a dignified, almost monastic seriousness, which contrasts sharply with the chaotic and often comedic nature of the protagonists. He is not prone to the typical villainous gloating; instead, his demeanor is one of grim determination and righteous fury from the perspective of his own dark faith. He views the revival of Gaav as a sacred duty and shows little patience for failure or insolence from his subordinates.
Garev's role in the story is to act as the instrument of a grand magical conspiracy. He and his followers orchestrate a scheme to use a powerful magical artifact known as the Giga Slave, the most dangerous spell in existence, to create a new body for Gaav. While the heroines Lina Inverse and Naga the Serpent are preoccupied with a seemingly separate monster infestation, Garev works behind the scenes to complete the ritual. His plan places him directly in opposition to Lina, whose own mastery of the Giga Slave makes her both a threat and an unwitting tool for his plans.
His key relationship is with his master, Gaav, whose revival defines his every action. Garev serves as a high priest, channeling his master’s will and acting as his sword in the mortal realm. His interactions with the main cast are purely adversarial; he views Lina and Naga as obstacles to be eliminated or exploited. He has no redeeming alliances with the heroes.
Garev does not undergo a significant character arc or development. He is introduced as a dedicated servant of evil, maintains that conviction throughout the film, and is ultimately destroyed when his plan fails. He is a static character whose function is to provide a serious, high-stakes threat that requires Lina to unleash her most forbidden power. His development is less about personal change and more about the escalating revelation of his true master plan.
Notably, Garev is a formidable combatant. Unlike many magic-users in the series, he relies heavily on physical combat and high-speed melee attacks. He wields a large sword with incredible skill and possesses superhuman speed and strength derived from his Mazoku lineage. While he is capable of magic, his primary method of fighting is to overwhelm his opponents with relentless, close-quarters assault. His power level is sufficient to easily outmatch both Lina and Naga in direct combat, forcing them to use their environment and teamwork to survive until Lina can prepare a spell powerful enough to defeat him.
