Description
Lord Haizen is a supporting antagonist in the 1997 anime film Slayers Great. He is an ambitious nobleman with red hair and yellow eyes. His primary motivation is to seize control of the town of Stoner, a community renowned for its tradition of golem-making. Haizen’s ultimate goal extends far beyond the town itself: he intends to use the town’s golem-crafting expertise to build an army of mass-produced war golems, with which he plans to conquer the entire kingdom. To achieve this, he sponsors a festival in Stoner featuring a remote-controlled golem battle. This contest is secretly a scheme to decide which of two feuding lords will take political control of the town. Haizen succeeds in hiring the young golem-maker Huey and the sorceress Naga the Serpent to build and pilot a golem on his behalf. His rival, Lord Granion, hires Huey’s father Galia and the sorceress Lina Inverse. Haizen views his rival Granion with contempt, seeing him as the final obstacle to his grand plan. During the film, Haizen’s scheme is ultimately undone when the golem battle spirals out of control. Lina’s powerful magic destroys the golems and both lords’ castles. In the aftermath, Haizen and Granion are stripped of their noble status and are reduced to serving as guards for the king. Lord Haizen does not possess personal magical or combat abilities; his power lies in his noble status, his wealth, and his willingness to manipulate others to further his ambitions. He is a pragmatic and calculating figure, focused on conquest through the use of technology and hired talent rather than direct confrontation. His key relationship is with his rival Granion, whom he despises, and his interactions with Huey and Naga are purely transactional, treating them as tools for his plan. Haizen shows no meaningful development over the course of the story; he begins as a scheming noble and ends as a humbled guard, a comedic comeuppance typical of the film’s tone.
