Description
Lion Rafale is a French teenager from one of the wealthiest families in his country, the Rafales, whose legitimate business in aircraft research and development masks a deeper involvement in illegal arms dealing. He is introduced as a high school student who has been practicing Praying Mantis Kung Fu since the age of five, having been placed under an instructor as part of his management education. Lion resents his father’s tight control over his life, and during a heated argument, his father sets a condition: if Lion can win the World Fighting Tournament, he will be released from all family obligations and expectations. This ultimatum becomes the driving force behind his participation in the series of tournaments.
Lion’s personality is marked by cockiness, arrogance, and a spoiled demeanor, often coming across as an entitled brat who looks down on other fighters. Despite this outward attitude, he has a softer side, most notably shown when he willingly risks his life to save a small dog from being hit by a speeding car in the opening of Virtua Fighter 3tb. In the anime television series Virtua Fighter, Lion first appears in episode seventeen, joining Akira Yuki and the others in their quest to rescue Sarah Bryant from the scientist Eva Durix. He initially meets Akira and travels with the group, and in some portrayals he develops a fondness for Sarah.
Throughout the story, Lion’s role evolves from a spoiled rich boy seeking escape into a more serious competitor. After being eliminated in the first round of the Second World Fighting Tournament, he discovers a hidden fighting spirit within himself and becomes totally absorbed in training to improve his skills. He enters the Third Tournament aiming to redeem himself, but suffers another defeat, which leads to self-doubt. His father, surprisingly proud of his son’s efforts, encourages him to keep training, and Lion returns for the Fourth Tournament with renewed confidence. Although he does not win, he leaves satisfied with his performance. Later, he stumbles upon documents that suggest his father’s company is connected to the shadowy organization J6. Troubled by this, he throws himself back into training and accepts an invitation to the Fifth World Fighting Tournament, hoping to uncover the truth about his family’s involvement.
Key relationships include his strained bond with his father, whose approval he seeks while also wanting independence. He is a childhood friend of Jean Kujo, though Jean later becomes brainwashed by J6. In the anime, he allies with Akira Yuki, Pai Chan, Jacky Bryant, Kage-Maru, and Shun Di as they work together to stop Eva Durix’s plans. His fighting style is Praying Mantis Kung Fu, which emphasizes speed and precise striking techniques. He is a fast, agile fighter who excels at close to mid-range combat, using quick moves and step-in attacks to pressure opponents from any distance. His attack power is relatively low, but his variety of techniques allows him to control the pace of the fight and create openings through persistent offense and solid defensive options.
