Description
Lion Rafale is a French teenager and the heir to the Rafale family, one of the wealthiest and most influential families in France. The family’s public success comes from the aircraft industry, but this business serves as a front for illegal arms contracts with terrorist organizations. Lion has been trained in Praying Mantis Kung Fu since the age of five, a discipline that was part of his management education and intended to prepare him for taking over the family enterprise.
Lion is headstrong, confident to the point of arrogance, and deeply resentful of his father’s control over his life. He dislikes being confined to the role of successor and craves the freedom to forge his own path. His central motivation is to break away from his father’s influence, and the driving conflict of his story stems from a deal his father proposed during an argument: if Lion can win the World Fighting Tournament, he will be released from all family obligations and allowed to live independently.
In the anime adaptation, Lion meets Akira Yuki during his travels in Europe and is impressed by Akira’s martial arts skill and, more importantly, his independence. This encounter reinforces Lion’s desire to achieve the same kind of self-determination. He also interacts with Sarah Bryant after she recovers from brainwashing, and some sources indicate a developing fondness for her. A notable relationship from his past is with Jean Kujo, his childhood friend, though Jean later becomes entangled with the shadowy organization J6.
Lion makes his first appearance in the second World Fighting Tournament, where he is eliminated in the first round. Despite this early defeat, the experience awakens a strong fighting spirit within him. He becomes completely absorbed in his training, determined to improve and prove himself. In the third tournament, he participates with the goal of redemption and testing his new abilities, but he suffers another defeat. After these two losses, he returns home doubting his own skills. His father, proud of him despite the failures, encourages him to resume training and helps him regain his confidence. When the invitation for the fourth tournament arrives, Lion leaves home full of renewed self-assurance and promises to win. Although he does not ultimately claim victory, he is satisfied with his performance and his growth as a fighter. After the fourth tournament, he stumbles upon documents that appear to link his father’s company to J6, a discovery that troubles him deeply. He tries to suppress his suspicions by training harder, but when an invitation for the fifth tournament arrives, he decides to participate in order to investigate the true nature of his father’s connection to J6.
Lion is a speedy fighter who relies primarily on striking techniques. His style is built on quick, agile movements that allow him to attack effectively from close to mid-range, and he has techniques that enable him to close distance while stepping in. His attack power is relatively low, and he lacks moves that easily start extended combos, but his wide variety of techniques gives him strong offensive and defensive options when used creatively, allowing him to fight at his own pace.
