Description
Lord Hazanko is the primary antagonist of the interstellar adventure, serving as a high-ranking and exceptionally powerful member of the Kei Pirate Guild. He holds the title of leader of the 108 Stars, a brutal and elite branch within the already formidable Kei organization. Although he answers to the Tendo King, the supreme leader of the Kei Pirates, Hazanko's own power, influence, and the scale of his personal forces are so great that he is considered by many to surpass his fellow guild leaders, feared and respected throughout the galaxy.
Very little is known about Hazanko's past, but it is clear that he is defined by an insatiable and endless ambition. Despite amassing vast wealth and influence over his long life, his desire for power remains unquenched. His ultimate goal is to overthrow his own masters, the Tendo King and the Tempa Emperor, who are the only individuals whose power surpasses his own. To achieve this, Hazanko seeks the Galactic Leyline, a legendary location said to hold the ultimate power in the universe. Officially tasked by the Tendo King to find the Leyline, Hazanko secretly intends to claim its power solely for himself, using it to crush his enemies and launch a universal conquest.
Hazanko's role in the story is that of a mastermind and a relentless hunter. He is the architect of the Leyline Project, which financially backed the scientist Gwen Kahn to decode ancient genetic data. This project led to the creation of two crucial assets: the bio-android Melfina, designed to serve as a navigator and key to the Leyline, and the advanced XGP 15A-II grappler ship, which would become the Outlaw Star. When these assets are stolen by the outlaw Hilda, Hazanko initiates a protracted campaign to reclaim his property. As the pursuit leads to the rise of a new outlaw, Gene Starwind, Hazanko becomes intrigued by the young man's potential. He dispatches his subordinates and, later, his personal elite force known as the Anten Seven to eliminate Gene and recover Melfina and the ship, viewing Gene's unchecked growth as a potential threat to the pirates' power.
Hazanko's relationships are primarily defined by authority and utility. He commands absolute loyalty from his subordinates, though he grows increasingly impatient and frustrated with their repeated failures. He shows little regard for the lives of his followers, callingly sending dozens to their deaths. His elite Anten Seven are his most trusted and powerful tools, yet he does not hesitate to dispose of those who fail him. His central dynamic is with Gene Starwind, whom he initially views merely as an obstacle, then as a subject of curiosity, and finally as a direct rival to be destroyed. He also has a possessive and utilitarian relationship with Melfina, seeing her only as the instrument to attain the Leyline's power.
Throughout the series, Hazanko undergoes a clear development from a calculating, behind-the-scenes schemer to a direct and active participant in the final conflict. Initially patient and willing to let his agents do his bidding, his frustration mounts with each failure of the Anten Seven. When a new method to breach the Leyline's defenses is discovered, he takes personal command, revealing his treachery against the Tendo King and moving to seize power for himself. Upon reaching the Leyline, his wish for absolute power is granted. He then transforms, using his newfound abilities to merge with his ship, the Geomancer, and its crew, becoming a giant, monstrous entity of man and machine. In this final form, he directly confronts the crew of the Outlaw Star, only to be ultimately destroyed in the climactic battle near the Leyline.
Hazanko is notable for his immense personal power, primarily channeled through Tao magic, an arcane art that blends sorcery with technology. His skill is such that only the Tendo King and the Tempa Emperor are his superiors. He can unleash powerful spells capable of tearing opponents apart, destroying ships, and even merging his own body with a large spacecraft. He commands his personal vessel, the Geomancer, a massive ship that serves as the base for his operations and houses a contingent of Tao masters. Hazanko is also a shrewd strategist and a powerful crime lord, having used his vast resources to develop the most advanced technology of his era in his quest for ultimate power.
