Description
James "Jim" Hawking is an eleven-year-old boy who serves as the business partner and sidekick to the protagonist, Gene Starwind. A child prodigy, Jim is the son of a famous computer hacker known only as the Computer Wizard, though the details of how he met Gene and came to co-own their small enterprise on the planet Sentinel III are not widely known.
In personality, Jim is the grounded and sensible counterpart to his older partner. He is responsible, level-headed, and practical, often shouldering the burden of managing their finances and expressing concern over future plans. Unlike Gene, who is reckless and prone to taking risks, Jim prefers to earn money through hard work and careful preparation, frequently complaining about Gene's overconfidence and lack of foresight. Despite his young age, he acts as a voice of reason for the crew, though he can become annoyed when treated like a child.
Jim's primary role within the team is that of the strategist, computer expert, and hacker. He possesses excellent mechanical expertise and is responsible for maintaining much of the crew's equipment. He also acts as a backup gunman in tense situations. His motivations are closely tied to his partnership with Gene and the crew of their ship, the Outlaw Star. While he is cautious and risk-averse, Jim is deeply loyal to his friends and dedicated to their shared survival and success, taking his responsibilities seriously even as he sometimes resents not being more involved in the action.
His key relationships define much of his role in the story. He shares a strong partnership with Gene Starwind, acting as the brains to Gene's brawn, though he is frequently exasperated by Gene's lecherous interests and careless attitude. Jim looks up to the android Melfina as a mother figure and is protective of her, often shielding her from Gene's unwanted advances. He becomes good friends with the boisterous Ctarl-Ctarl warrior Aisha Clan-Clan, which makes for an interesting dynamic as Jim, a child who acts like an adult, is contrasted with Aisha, an adult who acts like a child. He also gets along well with the ship's onboard computer, Gilliam II, and even customizes one of its maintenance robots with pink paint and silly eyebrows to use as a personal link. Jim is naturally wary of strangers, distrusting figures like the outlaw Hilda and the assassin Suzuka when they first appear due to their hidden agendas and dangerous natures.
As a static character who helps drive the plot rather than undergoing a fundamental transformation, Jim's development is subtle. He remains a competent and reliable figure throughout the series, though he experiences personal growth through specific challenges, such as a story involving his first love, a young girl who was actually an enemy pilot sent to destroy his ship.
Jim's notable abilities lie primarily in his intellect. He is an expert hacker capable of penetrating complex galactic information networks and a skilled mechanic who can repair advanced technology, including Melfina's cybernetic arm. He is a proficient strategist, a decent pilot of both ground vehicles and spacecraft, and capable of using a pistol in combat. He also carries a Personal Digital Assistant, which in one instance was used as a shield to save Gene's life.
