Description
Throughout the frontier, the name Hot Ice Hilda is spoken of as a legend among outlaws. The moniker Hot Ice derives from a duality in her reputation: Hot for her striking beauty and Ice for her remarkable ability to perform under extreme pressure. She is a space pirate and outlaw who has roamed the stars on her own terms for years, her only true friends being the denizens of the outlaw haven Blue Heaven and her trusted spaceship. Hilda carries the physical scars of her dangerous life, having lost one eye, which she covers with an eyepatch, and lost an arm, which has been replaced with a mechanical prosthetic.

Hilda is characterized by a quiet, serious, and professional demeanor. She is not one for jokes or frivolity, treating conversation and combat with equal efficiency. Unlike more volatile fighters, she derives no pleasure from battle or killing, viewing such actions as simply another task to be completed. Despite her cold and distant exterior, even around her allies, she commands immense respect in the outlaw community; she is known as a saver of asses, and those who know her never hesitate to answer when she calls in a favor. This respect comes from a reputation for careful planning combined with spur-of-the-moment resourcefulness.

For reasons she chooses not to disclose, Hilda holds a significant grudge against the Kei Pirates, a powerful criminal syndicate. To settle this score, she orchestrates one of the biggest heists in the frontier’s history. She steals two valuable assets being developed by the Space Forces with Kei Pirate funds: a prototype advanced starship designated the XGP15A-II, and a bio-android named Melfina, who is designed to be the ship's navigator. After hiding the ship inside an asteroid, Hilda travels to the planet Sentinel III under the alias Rachel Sweet with the bio-android in a briefcase. There, she hires the small-time bounty hunter and handyman Gene Starwind and his young partner Jim Hawking to serve as her bodyguards and help her acquire the necessary parts to repair her damaged cybernetic arm.

When the Kei Pirates inevitably track her down, Hilda reveals her true identity to Gene and Jim, forcibly involving them in her escape. Her role in the story is that of a catalyst, pulling the reluctant Gene into a larger galactic conflict far beyond his usual odd jobs. She leads the group to Blue Heaven and then to the asteroid where the XGP is stored. Hilda's primary relationship is with Gene Starwind. While she initially holds him at gunpoint to ensure her plan succeeds, a grudging mutual respect forms between the seasoned outlaw and the reckless young man. Her final act defines her legacy and serves as a pivotal moment for Gene. As the Kei Pirates close in using a Tao tracker spell, Hilda uses her own ship, the Horus, as a decoy to allow Gene, Jim, and Melfina to escape in the XGP. Her ship is severely damaged and begins falling into the gravity well of a nearby star. Adrift in a spacesuit and facing certain death, Hilda remains defiant. With her final words, Outlaws never go down easy, she activates a bomb hidden in her false tooth, sacrificing herself to destroy the pursuing Tao master and pirates. Her development is cut short by her death, but it is a complete arc of a legend passing the torch; in her memory, Gene renames the stolen XGP the Outlaw Star.

Hilda possesses notable abilities befitting her legendary status. Despite her eyepatch, she is an extremely talented markswoman. She wields a distinctive, medium-sized black blaster that operates differently from standard energy weapons. It requires manual reloading of individual shells for each shot, but this drawback allows it to fire a wide variety of specialized ammunition with significant destructive potential. When a lever is pulled, the barrel extends to reveal a turbine, which can modify the shell's effect to fire things like homing energy missiles. The weapon is also capable of firing caster shells, which are bullets containing magical spells. In addition to her skill with firearms, Hilda is trained in hand-to-hand combat, allowing her to defend herself during the brief moments her unique weapon requires to reload.
