Description
Menoumaru is the primary antagonist of the first InuYasha feature film, created as an original character not found in the original manga series. He is a powerful moth demon originally from the Asian continent who invaded Japan two hundred years prior to the main story alongside his father, a great demon lord named Hyoga. The invasion was opposed by Inuyasha's father, the Great Dog Demon, who ultimately defeated Hyoga and sealed both the father's immense power and the son, Menoumaru, within the ancient Tree of Ages. Menoumaru remains sealed for two centuries until a shard of the shattered Shikon Jewel embeds itself in his chest, reversing the spell and awakening him to the world once more. Upon his revival, he establishes a new base beneath the Tree of Ages and recalls his two female servants, Ruri and Hari, to assist him in his plans.

As the heir to a powerful demon clan, Menoumaru possesses an aristocratic and extremely confident demeanor. He speaks with a reserved courtesy, even when addressing his enemies, but this politeness is undercut by a deep-seated cynicism and a sadistic edge when he fights. He is intelligent and calculating, preferring to manipulate events from a distance using spy moths and elaborate traps rather than simply relying on brute force. Menoumaru displays a casual playfulness in his dealings with Inuyasha and his friends, often teasing them as if their efforts are little more than an amusing diversion. He holds a profound disdain for humans, viewing them as disgusting creatures. This contempt also extends to half-demons, as he expresses particular disgust at the idea of a half-demon like Inuyasha being coupled with a mortal girl, a relationship he sees as unnatural and foul.

Menoumaru's primary motivation is to unlock and inherit the near-limitless demonic power that was sealed away with his father. He believes this legacy is his birthright and seeks to become the new Lord Hyoga, a title that represents the accumulated power of all previous clan generations. To achieve this, he must first break the seal placed on Hyoga's power by the Great Dog Demon's fang. Initially, he pursues the Tenseiga, the sword wielded by Sesshomaru, but upon sensing that it lacks an aura of destruction, he redirects his focus to the Tessaiga, the fang of destruction possessed by Inuyasha. He devises a plan to trick Inuyasha into shattering the seal with the Tessaiga's power, viewing Inuyasha as a tool to be manipulated. After successfully absorbing his father's power, Menoumaru's ambitions expand to nothing less than world domination, intending to populate the world with his demon minions and absorbing countless human souls to complete his own transformation into a demon god.

In the story, Menoumaru serves as the main antagonist who draws the entire group into a conflict. He uses his servants to separate Sango and Miroku while he confronts Inuyasha directly. He quickly overpowers the half-demon and stabs him, but discovers he cannot wield the Tessaiga himself because it possesses a barrier that repels full-blooded demons. To circumvent this, he kidnaps Kagome, correctly assuming that Inuyasha's feelings for her will force a rescue attempt. He successfully goads Inuyasha into using the Wind Scar attack, which destroys the seal and releases Hyoga's power. Menoumaru then absorbs this power, becoming the new Lord Hyoga and transforming into a gigantic moth-like entity that begins to absorb souls and warp the fabric of time and space itself. His control over Kagome, achieved by tainting a Shikon shard with his blood to overcome her spiritual powers, places her under a mental spell that forces her to attack and pin Inuyasha to the sacred tree, mirroring the pivotal event from fifty years prior. This act ultimately backfires, as Kagome's despair breaks the spell, and she eventually returns to help defeat him.

While Menoumaru does not undergo a moral change or redemption, his development is defined by his physical and political transformation. He begins as a cunning strategist who operates indirectly, using servants and manipulation. After absorbing his father's power and becoming Lord Hyoga, he abandons subtlety and emerges as a direct, godlike threat who believes himself invincible. His defeat comes only through the combined power of Inuyasha's Backlash Wave technique and a sacred arrow from Kagome, demonstrating that even his inherited power has limits.

Menoumaru possesses a range of notable abilities befitting a high-ranking demon. As a moth demon, he has the power of flight and can control swarms of smaller demon moths, which he uses for surveillance, communication, and as a weapon, releasing a poisonous powder that can render humans unconscious. He wields a sword in combat and is a formidable fighter, able to easily disarm and mortally wound Inuyasha in their first encounter. His most significant ability is a form of self-resurrection fueled by his father's sealed power; after Inuyasha appears to kill him with the Wind Scar, Menoumaru's body simply absorbs energy from the seal and regenerates completely, to his enemy's shock. He can also manipulate nature to a limited degree, his emotions causing the environment around him to react. After absorbing Hyoga's power and becoming Lord Hyoga, he gains exponentially greater strength, the ability to summon demons, fire powerful energy blasts, and use finger extensions in combat. Crucially, his plan to control Kagome also demonstrates his ability to taint and manipulate a Shikon Jewel shard to overcome spiritual purification.
