Description
Menomaru is a powerful demon originating from the Asian continent who serves as the primary antagonist of the first InuYasha film. He is the son of Hyoga, a formidable moth demon who led an invasion of Japan two hundred years prior to the film's events. During that original assault, Menomaru accompanied his father and his two loyal servants, Ruri and Hari. Their plans were thwarted by Inuyasha's father, the Great Dog Demon, who defeated Hyoga and sealed both his immense power and his son within the sacred Tree of Ages. Menomaru's own form was sealed as well, kept in a dormant state for two centuries until a shard of the shattered Shikon Jewel pierced his chest and revived him. This jewel shard awakened him and reversed the ancient spell, setting his plans into motion.

Menomaru possesses a personality marked by an aristocratic demeanor and a deep, cynical pride in his own abilities. He is highly intelligent and calculating, often appearing reserved and speaking to his enemies with a deceptive and almost courteous tone. This pride leads him to claim that he has no need for the Shikon Jewel shard that revived him, despite its crucial role in his resurrection. He displays a level of arrogance that draws comparisons to Sesshomaru, coupled with a sadistic streak that becomes evident when he engages in combat, where he fights without mercy. He holds a distinctly low opinion of humans, referring to them as disgusting creatures, and is visibly repulsed by the bond between Inuyasha, a half-demon, and Kagome, a mortal girl. However, he is not without a sense of amusement, often teasing his opponents and displaying a level of levity as he toys with what he perceives as weaker beings.

His primary motivation is to inherit the vast, sealed power of his father to become the new Lord Hyoga and ultimately conquer the world, intending to populate it with his demon minions. To accomplish this, he must break the seal on his father's power, which was secured by one of the Great Dog Demon's fangs. He initially believes the Tenseiga, Sesshomaru's sword, is the key, but after his servants fail to steal it, he observes the battle and deduces that the sword lacks the necessary aura of destruction. He correctly concludes that the other sword, the Tessaiga wielded by Inuyasha, possesses the destructive force required to shatter the seal. His role in the story is to orchestrate a plan to lure Inuyasha into using the Tessaiga against the seal, leveraging Inuyasha's attachment to Kagome. To this end, he personally incapacitates Inuyasha, abducts Kagome, and has her placed under mind control, forcing Inuyasha to come to her rescue at the Tree of Ages.

Key relationships define his actions. His relationship with his father, Hyoga, is not one of personal loyalty but of ambition, as he seeks to absorb Hyoga's power as his birthright to fuel his own ascension. His servants, Ruri and Hari, are loyal subordinates he uses to carry out his plans, such as distracting Inuyasha's allies and capturing Kirara. His primary antagonistic relationship is with Inuyasha, whom he sees both as an obstacle to be manipulated and a half-breed to be looked down upon. He also serves as a direct thematic foil to Inuyasha and his father, representing a legacy of conquest and demonic purity that clashes with the dog demon lineage and its respect for humans.

Throughout the film, Menomaru undergoes a significant transformation in power and status. After successfully tricking Inuyasha into using the Wind Scar to destroy the seal, he absorbs his father's power and encloses himself in a chrysalis. He emerges as the new Lord Hyoga, a far more powerful entity resembling a giant moth god. In this form, he begins absorbing the souls of people across the region to complete his evolution and begins to manipulate the very fabric of time and space around the sacred tree. This development forces his enemies to adapt, and he is ultimately only defeated by the combined power of Inuyasha's enhanced Backlash Wave and a sacred arrow from Kagome.

As a moth demon, Menomaru possesses a variety of notable abilities. He can fly at high speeds and command swarms of insects to do his bidding, including using their poison powder to render humans unconscious. He displays the ability to manipulate his natural surroundings through sheer will or emotion. With the aid of the tainted Shikon shard, he can possess and control others, most notably using a jeweled shell to control Kagome and turn her into a puppet capable of firing sacred arrows and wielding poisonous claws against Inuyasha. After becoming Lord Hyoga, his powers expand dramatically, granting him nigh-limitless demonic energy, immortality in combat due to constant regeneration from his father's reserves, and the ability to absorb human souls to fuel his metamorphosis into a more god-like state.
