Description
Menomaru Hyouga is a moth demon and the primary antagonist of the film, serving as the son of the powerful demon Hyoga. His origin traces back two hundred years before the main story, when he and his father invaded Japan from the Asian continent. Their forces were opposed by Inuyasha's father, the Great Dog Demon. In the ensuing battle, Hyoga was defeated, and both his immense power and Menomaru himself were sealed away within the ancient Tree of Ages, bound by one of the Great Dog Demon's fangs.
Menomaru remains in this sealed state for two centuries until a shard of the shattered Shikon Jewel pierces his chest, reviving him. Upon awakening, his primary motivation becomes the acquisition of his father's sealed power to become the new Lord Hyoga. His ultimate ambition expands from simply inheriting his clan's position to a grander scheme of conquering the entire world and populating it with his demon minions, a goal he believes himself fully capable of achieving. To break the seal on his father's power, he seeks the Tessaiga, the sword of the Great Dog Demon, believing its destructive aura is the key.
In terms of personality, Menomaru carries himself with an aristocratic and reserved demeanor, exhibiting a high degree of confidence in his own abilities as the heir to a powerful demon clan. He speaks to his enemies with a certain level of courtesy, though this politeness often carries an undercurrent of condescension and playfulness, as he tends to view opponents like Inuyasha as being so weak that their attacks are merely an amusing diversion. He is described as intelligent, cynical, and possessing a sadistic streak in battle. His view of humans is notably disparaging, referring to them as repugnant creatures. This arrogance is further displayed when he willingly gives up the Shikon Jewel shard that revived him, boasting that his own power has already advanced to a point where he no longer needs it.
Menomaru's role in the story is that of a cunning and manipulative strategist. Unable to touch the Tessaiga himself due to a barrier that repels full-blooded demons, he devises a plan to use Inuyasha's own emotions against him. He kidnaps Kagome, correctly assuming that Inuyasha's attachment to her mirrors his own father's love for a human woman, and lures the half-demon to the Forest of No Return. There, he goads Inuyasha into destroying the fang that seals his father, successfully breaking the seal and allowing Menomaru to absorb Hyoga's power. Following this transformation, he begins absorbing the souls of living beings to complete his metamorphosis into a new, god-like entity. During the final confrontation, he uses his control over Kagome to force her to attack Inuyasha, pinning him to the sacred tree in a cruel echo of the past.
His key relationships are primarily with his two loyal servants, Ruri and Hari, who carry out his orders to steal swords and separate Inuyasha's companions from him. While he treats them as subordinates, he relies on them to deal with intruders and alleviate his boredom. His central conflict is with Inuyasha, whom he views as a pawn to be manipulated and a rival to be destroyed, though he also has a brief adversarial encounter with Sesshomaru when he mistakenly sends his servants to steal the Tenseiga.
Menomaru undergoes significant development in terms of power rather than personality. Initially a powerful demon in his own right, his absorption of his father's legacy transforms him into a vastly more formidable being. As the new Lord Hyoga, he is reborn from a chrysalis with nearly limitless power, capable of altering the very essence of time and space through his soul-collection. However, despite this evolution, his core arrogance and disdain for others remain unchanged.
Notable abilities common to his moth demon lineage include flight and the manipulation of insects. He wields a sword in combat and can generate a powerful wave of poison. He also demonstrates the ability to control nature around him through his emotions. After absorbing his father's power, his strength, destructive capability, and fortitude are enhanced to an extraordinary degree, allowing him to overwhelm Inuyasha until a combination of the Backlash Wave and a sacred arrow from Kagome exploits a critical weakness. He can also place individuals under mind control by using a tainted jewel shard attached to a shell, which he uses to possess Kagome.
