Description
Glen, also known as Gulen or Guren, is a character who appears exclusively in the anime adaptation of Zenki, having no major counterpart in the original manga aside from design sketches. He is introduced as one of the three disciples, or servants, of the dark priestess Karuma, serving as a primary antagonist during her story arc. Physically, Glen is a young man with a striking appearance, characterized by his spiky, short purple hair that reaches his ears and sharp yellow eyes. He typically wears a flowing red cape over a red tunic fastened with golden shoulder plates, beneath which is a black suit with yellow trim. When entering combat, he dons a suit of gold and red armor, often accompanied by a horned helmet.
In terms of personality, Glen is defined by his impatience, hot-headedness, and immense self-confidence in his own magical power. He is quick to anger over simple matters and is easily provoked, notably by his fellow disciple, Goula, whom he dismisses as an old man only to become enraged when called a greenhorn in return. He holds a fierce conviction that he is the strongest among Karuma's three disciples and is highly motivated to prove this by being the first to eliminate the series' protagonists, the Guardian Warrior Zenki and the Onmyouji Chiaki. Despite his arrogance and short temper, his most defining trait is his fanatical loyalty to his master, Karuma. This devotion is so absolute that he is willing to sacrifice his own life without hesitation for her sake, remaining faithful to her even when facing impossible circumstances.
Within the narrative, Glen acts as a recurring obstacle for Zenki and Chiaki, frequently confronting them to clear a path for his master's dark ambitions. He shares a deep but combative relationship with his fellow disciples. He and Goula are intense rivals, constantly arguing over who is the superior servant, a dynamic that often requires Karuma or the gentle Anju to mediate. This rivalry eventually turns to outright betrayal when Goula attacks Glen during a critical moment. However, Glen survives, disguises himself as a blue-armored soldier, and later reveals his identity to exact revenge by stabbing Goula and handing him over to Karuma for judgment.
Glen undergoes a significant, if tragic, development in the final stages of his story. Trapped in an alternate timeline, he becomes desperate to return to his own era. In a last-ditch effort to prevent Zenki from stopping his plans, he attempts to destroy the Time Gate. He is ultimately defeated in a brief battle with Zenki, and the consequence of being trapped in the wrong time is that his body rapidly ages, becoming withered and decrepit before finally disintegrating entirely.
As a powerful magician and warrior, Glen possesses a wide array of notable abilities. He can teleport, fly, and detect the existence of the Seeds of Evil. He is capable of transforming a Seed of Evil into a living being to serve his purposes. In combat, his arsenal includes techniques such as the Wind Sword for offensive strikes, the Black Star attack, the Flying Flame, and Black Needles. For defense, he can summon a Pentagram Shield and utilize a Magic Choker. His ultimate technique involves inverting the pentagram for a powerful, reversed magical effect.
