Description
Cherry Nai, known in the original Japanese version as Chiaki Enno, is a central character in the anime Zenki. She is depicted as a sixteen-year-old high school girl who also serves as the attendant of the Enno Temple, living there with her grandmother and great-uncle. As the fifty-fifth direct descendant of the great ancient sorcerer Ozunu Enno, she carries a significant spiritual legacy and is herself an apprentice sorceress.
In terms of personality, Cherry is generally charismatic, lively, and fun-loving, with a strong sense of care for the people around her. She is kind, honest, and possesses a good heart, believing in people and wishing to protect them. This compassionate nature is particularly evident when a person possessed by a Seed of Evil is someone she cares about, as she will plead with Zenki to avoid destroying the host if possible. Despite her generally upbeat demeanor, she is not afraid to assert herself, often scolding and even physically disciplining Zenki when he is in his bratty child form and acting disobediently. However, when Zenki transforms into his powerful adult form, her reaction shifts to one of awe and even fear.
Cherry’s primary motivation is to protect her world from the resurgence of the Demon Goddess Karuma’s evil influence. Her adventure begins when two thieves accidentally break a seal, releasing Karuma’s Seeds. These seeds resemble eyeballs and possess people, turning them into monsters. When her own friends fall victim to a monster born from a seed, Cherry cries out for help, which frees the demon warrior Zenki from his imprisonment and bestows a magical Guardian Bracelet upon her arm. From that point on, her role is to destroy all the scattered Seeds of Evil and eventually confront the greater evil behind them.
Her role in the story is that of the master and summoner to Zenki, the titular demon god. The bracelet she wears is the key to controlling him; she uses it to summon him, to transform him from a demon child into his true, colossal demon lord form for battle, and to create protective energy barriers. This relationship is central to the plot, as Zenki is the only one with the power to eradicate the Seeds of Evil, and Cherry is the only one who can unleash and command that power. While her magical abilities are primarily curative in nature, she is also capable of offensive spells, including those utilizing fire and wind.
Key relationships define her journey. Her bond with Zenki is the most important; it is a turbulent partnership that begins with his defiance and her fear, but over time, she becomes genuinely attached to him, worrying when his life is in danger, though their dynamic often resembles that of an older sister scolding a troublesome little brother. She also develops a close relationship with Akira Goto, the human reincarnation of the demon god Goki, who was Zenki’s faithful comrade in the past. Unlike her combative interactions with Zenki, she gets along very well with the wise and kind Akira, who acts as a mentor and protector. She maintains a normal school life with her three dear friends, Sayaka, Ako, and Ayame, and lives with her grandmother, Saki Enno, who guides her.
Throughout the series, Cherry undergoes significant development in her power and confidence. Initially, she is entirely dependent on the Guardian Bracelet to control Zenki. However, as she grows stronger, the bracelet becomes less necessary. In the final episode of the anime, after the bracelet is severely damaged, she attains a higher level of power that allows her to command Zenki without its aid, signifying her full maturation as a sorceress and the true heir to Ozunu Enno’s legacy. Among her other notable abilities, Cherry can summon a small, fluffy guardian spirit named Lulupapa, who serves as a companion and mascot for the team.
