TV-Series
Description
Captain Abraham Avatar is the commanding officer of the space battleship Argo and the central authority figure in the Earth defense force known as the Star Force. As a senior officer of the United Nations Cosmo Navy, he is a veteran commander with a long history of service, having previously led a fleet of Earth ships in battle against the Gamilon empire at Pluto. He is a man in his mid-sixties, his age and experience marked by a stern and resolute demeanor that commands respect from his crew.
His personality is defined by a deep sense of duty and personal sacrifice. He is utterly devoted to his mission to save Earth from the Gamilon threat, even at the cost of his own life. While outwardly stern and authoritative, he possesses a profound sense of compassion and responsibility, viewing the young, inexperienced crew of the Argo not just as soldiers but as individuals he must guide and protect. He is a natural mentor, showing patience and understanding as he helps shape the ship's youthful personnel into mature leaders. This sense of personal loss is a driving force in his character; he has lost his wife and his only son in the war, and he carries the weight of these tragedies with a quiet, unyielding courage.
Captain Avatar's primary motivation is the survival of his home world. In the year 2199, Earth is facing extinction due to radiation poisoning from Gamilon planet bombs, with less than a year before all life on the planet is eradicated. He is chosen to command the Argo on a desperate, hope-filled mission to travel to the distant planet Iscandar and retrieve the Cosmo DNA, a device capable of cleansing Earth's ravaged surface. Despite the overwhelming odds and the pleas of other officers to abandon the attempt, Avatar firmly decides to proceed with the mission, viewing it as Earth's last and only chance for salvation. He is convinced he will live to see his home world again, a belief that fuels his determination even as his own health fails.
In the story, Avatar serves as the anchor of the Star Force. He is the strategic mastermind and the moral center of the voyage, guiding the ship through countless Gamilon assaults with brilliant tactical thinking. Even as he grows increasingly ill from radiation sickness, becoming bedridden, he remains an invaluable source of advice and wisdom for the crew. His role is not only to command but to inspire, and his unwavering resolve becomes the bedrock upon which the success of the mission rests.
His most significant relationship is with the young and brash officer Derek Wildstar. Avatar regards Wildstar as a surrogate son, filling the void left by his own deceased child. He also deeply regrets the death of Wildstar's older brother, who served under his command and was lost in battle at Pluto. This connection drives Avatar to guide Wildstar, tempering his insubordination and recklessness while cultivating his potential for leadership. Even when confined to his quarters by his illness, he continues to mentor Wildstar, preparing him to eventually take command. His other key relationships are with the ship's doctor, Doctor Sane, who monitors his failing health, and with his crew as a whole, to whom he is a revered and almost paternal figure.
Over the course of the first season, Avatar undergoes a profound physical decline, yet his spirit and leadership only intensify. He transitions from an active, commanding presence on the bridge to a dying man who leads from his bed, his voice over the ship's intercom a constant source of direction and hope. His most significant development is his final act of sacrifice. Although he is terminally ill with radiation poisoning, he refuses to give up command or rest until his mission is complete.
Notable abilities include his exceptional strategic mind and tactical brilliance, which earn him the admiration of even his enemies. His greatest ability, however, is his leadership. He possesses the rare talent to inspire absolute loyalty and to cultivate the abilities of his young officers. In the end, he dies with Earth in view of the ship, having successfully guided the Star Force to the brink of salvation. After his death, residual brain activity allows for his eventual revival, and he later returns to command the Star Force against new threats, continuing to embody the principles of duty and sacrifice. He once famously declared that the Argo stood between the Gamilons and Earth, emphasizing that they must prevail as the planet's last defense.
