Description
Colonel Volgar is a secondary antagonist from the first season of the anime Star Blazers, serving as a Gamilon officer stationed on the strategically vital planet Balan, which lies approximately halfway between Earth and Iscandar. He is a career military man with a deep-seated ambition and a pronounced jealous streak, traits that define his role in the story. Known as Geru in the original Japanese version, Volgar is initially introduced as the commander of the Gamilon base on Balan. However, his authority is abruptly undermined with the arrival of General Lysis, a superior officer who assumes command of the base and relegates Volgar to the position of his aide.
This demotion is the central driver of Volgar's personality and actions. He responds with constant grumbling and resentment, motivated by a powerful desire to regain his standing and prove his worth to Leader Desslok, the supreme ruler of the Gamilon Empire. Rather than serving Lysis effectively, Volgar is consumed by professional jealousy and frequently schemes behind his superior's back, hoping to take credit for destroying the Star Force. His primary motivation is to curry favor with Desslok by achieving a decisive victory where Lysis has failed.
In terms of story role, Volgar serves as a direct threat to the crew of the Argo during their voyage. His most notable action is the deployment of a unique and terrifying biological weapon he had been developing before Lysis's arrival. Using a mental telepathy device, Volgar creates a neural link with billions of microscopic organisms native to Balan. He controls these creatures to form a giant, space-faring monster called the Balanosaurus, which he unleashes to destroy the Argo. This event showcases his resourcefulness and his willingness to use unconventional tactics to achieve his goals.
Volgar's key relationships are defined by rivalry and ambition. His relationship with General Lysis is one of open antagonism, as he resents his subordinate position and seeks to undermine his commander at every turn. He also has a direct, if distant, relationship with Leader Desslok, whom he hopes to impress. The character begins his arc in a position of power, only to be humiliated by a demotion. His desperate, jealousy-fueled attempt to reclaim his status by creating the Balanosaurus ultimately fails, leading to his disgrace. Along with General Lysis, Volgar is defeated by the Star Force around episode 22, ending his immediate threat to the mission. His notable abilities are not physical but strategic, centering on his scientific knowledge and his proficiency with the mind amplifier, a device that allows him to control the microscopic lifeforms and form them into a cohesive, monstrous weapon.
