Description
Mark Venture, known in the original Japanese continuity as Daisuke Shima, is a United Nations Cosmo Navy officer and a key member of the Star Force aboard the space battleship Argo. He serves as the ship’s chief navigator and helmsman, holding the rank of air captain first class. Born in Okinawa Prefecture, Shima originally served as a third‑class air captain in the 101st regular space division before receiving a two‑class promotion to chief navigator after his predecessor was killed in action against the Gamilas.

Shima is defined by a calm, rational demeanor that balances the more impulsive and hot‑headed nature of his best friend, Susumu Kodai (known as Derek Wildstar in the English adaptation). This complementary partnership, often symbolized as the “Double Star,” is central to his role on the bridge: while Kodai commands the tactical division, Shima’s steady presence at the helm provides a grounding influence for the crew. He takes great pride in his ability to guide the Argo through impossible odds, such as navigating the treacherous currents of the Dimensional Fault, and his precise helm control has proven vital in evading enemy fire.

His motivations stem from a deep sense of duty and loyalty to the mission of saving Earth, as well as an abiding commitment to his comrades. Over the course of the series, Shima evolves from a sometimes hesitant navigator into a trusted leadership cornerstone. In later installments, such as the 2199 and 2202 remakes, his family history – particularly the legacy of his father, Daigo Shima – is explored, and he steps into larger responsibilities within the Earth Federation. Shima’s relationships extend beyond Kodai; he shares a professional respect with Shiro Sanada, often consulting him on tactical navigation, and in the 2199 continuity he develops a nuanced connection with Gamilas pilot Melda Dietz, reflecting a potential for peace between their peoples.

Notable abilities include exceptional navigational and piloting skills, an unflappable composure in crisis, and a talent for maintaining crew morale through his measured tone and reliability. His calm voice on the bridge reassures those around him, and his growth from a skilled pilot to a senior officer underlines his deep arc of responsibility. Shima remains a constant presence on the Yamato across its many voyages, embodying the continuity and steadiness that the ship requires.
