Description
Analyzer, also known as IQ-9 in English adaptations, is an autonomous robot who originally served in a hospital for the Earth Defense Force before voluntarily transferring to the battleship Yamato to prove his capabilities beyond routine tasks. He has a compact, non-humanoid design with a hemispherical head, two arms, and short legs ending in multi-wheeled feet, though he is often referred to with male pronouns. His frame possesses extendable arms capable of heavy labor such as lifting and throwing enemy tanks, and he can separate his body into independently moving pieces. Analyzer is equipped with integrated sensors that detect energy signatures, environmental fluctuations, chemical composition, temperature, and life signs, and his body can withstand the pressure of forcefields. He also has a high-powered laser in his left index finger, fingertip cables for grasping or computer access, and small thrusters for zero-gravity mobility. On the Yamato, his primary role is technical support, shipboard analysis, environmental surveying, and damage control; he also helps maintain life-support systems, including harvesting tomatoes from hydroponic gardens. Analyzer prefers to be called by his name rather than a numerical designation. His personality is marked by wisecracking humor and a comedic partnership with Dr. Sado, with whom he often forms a double act. He is prone to making unwelcome advances toward female crew members, most notably Yuki Mori, including revealing her personal belongings, which earns him labels such as a pervert. However, in some adaptations these lecherous traits are subdued, and he acts more chivalrously, such as verbally defending crew members from harassment. Analyzer is also susceptible to human vices like alcohol, which once nearly caused a major disaster. He develops a deep affection for Yuki Mori, declaring his love and desire to marry her, though when she cannot return his feelings he settles into a platonic friendship. He shares a significant bond with Dr. Sado and, in some versions, forms a kinship with a damaged Garmillan android named Alter, which leads him to contemplate the nature of his own existence. Over the course of the story, Analyzer evolves from a source of comedic relief into a character demonstrating loyalty, protective instincts, and moral growth, such as when he confronts those harassing a fellow crew member. He is assigned to dangerous excursions outside the ship, sometimes using a large exoskeleton to augment his speed and strength, and he partners with the science officer to study captured enemy technology, even developing a computer virus to disable enemy robots.
