Description
Masanari Tate is introduced as a gentle and dedicated kendo instructor who serves as a mentor to the protagonist, Kyoji Miura. He is also an art teacher and a close friend to Kyoji. Unknown to those around him, Tate is the reincarnation of an ancient Inca warrior named Yawaru. As Yawaru's soul awakens within him, Tate undergoes a profound transformation, abandoning his mild-mannered personality and embracing a fanatical worldview. He becomes convinced that the modern world is corrupt and weak, and he believes that only by destroying it can true purity be restored. This conviction drives his motivation to release Iryatesse, a powerful mystical energy source, which he intends to use to cleanse the earth, even if it results in the deaths of millions. He views destruction not as chaos but as a sacred duty, speaking with charismatic intensity and blending teacherly guidance with zealous condescension.
In the story, Tate serves as the primary antagonist. After awakening, he gathers other reincarnated Inca spirits—including Kyoji's friend Hiroshi Daimon, rival Shinri Shiogami, Shiogami's half-sister Tatsuko, and the god Garos—to aid him in his mission. Kyoji, who is the reincarnation of the warrior Bilka who thwarted Yawaru in the past, must oppose Tate. The conflict forces Kyoji to confront whether he is bound by fate or can appeal to Tate's original humanity. Tate's key relationships include his former student Kyoji, whom he once respected but now views as an obstacle, and his ex-fiancée Yuka Kiritake, who joins Kyoji's side.
Personality-wise, Tate transitions from a kind, affectionate person into a ruthless, single-minded zealot. He tests others to determine if they are worthy allies or merely obstacles, and his philosophy emphasizes conviction, strength, and the glory of the ancient Inca Empire. He fully embraces his past life as Yawaru, rejecting any ties to his modern identity. His development is marked by this complete surrender to his reincarnated soul, making him a tragic figure who cannot be reasoned with once his mission is set.
Notable abilities include his mastery of kendo, which he uses in combat, as well as supernatural powers associated with Yawaru. He can transform into a more monstrous form, becoming a fearsome warrior without scruples. He also demonstrates the ability to manipulate Iryatesse energy and to awaken dormant souls in others, gathering followers to his cause. Ultimately, his strength lies in his unwavering resolve, which makes him a formidable opponent for those who seek to preserve the present world.
