Description
Alpha A. Bate is a fictional character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. He is a 28-year-old officer in the Earth Federation Forces who initially holds the rank of lieutenant. Bate is a veteran of the One Year War, during which he served as a mobile suit pilot under the command of South Burning as a member of the celebrated Immortal 4th Platoon. Following the war, he was stationed at Torrington Base before being reassigned to the assault ship Albion as a reinforcement pilot to help recover the stolen RX-78GP02A Gundam.

In terms of personality, Bate is known for being quarrelsome and hot-tempered. He is frequently seen alongside his close friend and fellow pilot Bernard Monsha, and the two are often considered troublemakers within the Albion’s crew. While Monsha tends to be flirtatious and provocative, Bate is more prone to acting on his temper, creating a dynamic where they encourage each other's disruptive behavior. Despite his rough exterior, he is not without a sense of camaraderie; for instance, he once warned Monsha about harassing a female mechanic, demonstrating that he draws a line at bullying colleagues. He is also known for his crude language and taunts directed at his Zeon adversaries, occasionally celebrating a successful kill with an obscene gesture, an act that has famously led to his own mobile suit being damaged in a counterattack.

Bate’s primary motivation is his duty as a Federation soldier and a desire to prove himself as a capable pilot. His role in the story begins as a supporting member of the Albion’s mobile suit corps. However, after the death of his former commander, South Burning, Bate is given a wartime field promotion to the rank of captain by the ship’s captain, Eiphar Synapse. This promotion elevates him to the position of commander of the Albion’s mobile suit squadron, placing him in a leadership role during the critical battles of the Delaz Conflict.

His most significant relationship is with his former commander, South Burning, whom he deeply respects and whose death serves as a turning point for his character. He also has a close, if combative, friendship with Bernard Monsha and a professional relationship with the other surviving member of his original team, Chap Adel. Following the conflict with the Delaz Fleet, Bate, along with most of the surviving crew of the Albion, is assigned to the newly formed Titans, an elite counter-insurgency unit.

Bate demonstrates notable development throughout the series, transforming from a hot-headed, undisciplined troublemaker into a more composed and responsible squadron leader following his promotion. While he retains his aggressive edge, he awakens to the responsibilities of command and is able to effectively organize his unit to survive the intense battles of the conflict. His abilities are rooted in his experience as a veteran pilot who survived the One Year War. He is proficient with Earth Federation mobile suits, most notably piloting the RGM-79N GM Custom. His skills, while not superhuman, are sufficient to make him a reliable combatant and leader among the Federation’s rank-and-file forces.
