Description
Chooki Mason is a main protagonist in the anime Tenkai Knights, a thirteen year old boy who wields the core of the legendary Tenkai Knight known as Lydendor. He has a distinctive appearance with ginger hair pulled into a short ponytail, yellow bangs, and bright emerald green eyes. His typical outfit consists of a navy blue t shirt worn with a metal shouldered yellow sleeveless jacket vest, dark grey sweatpants, and white sneakers.
Chooki has a calm and composed disposition, consistently presenting himself as the most athletic member of the group who eagerly looks forward to any challenge. He excels not only in sports but also in his schoolwork, as he strives to do his best in every endeavor. This drive for excellence makes him deeply disturbed whenever he encounters something he cannot master, such as fishing, which becomes a notable personal frustration for him. Despite his many talents, Chooki remains modest and is described as someone who almost never backs down from a fight. He is highly loyal to his friends and frequently puts himself at risk to protect them, demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility that positions him as a co leader alongside Guren Nash, while the other two members of the core group, Ceylan Jones and Toxsa Dalton, provide more comic relief.
As the Tenkai Knight Lydendor, Chooki embraces the title of Tenkai Agility. His primary weapons include a short blade that he can wield in melee combat or extend on a chain to use as a flail, as well as a shield equipped with three curved blades that he can throw and have return to him. He is a natural strategist, often responsible for coming up with battle plans for the Knights, and he frequently uses sports terminology when discussing combat or events on the alien world of Quarton. The design of his armor draws inspiration from a wasp or bee, reflected in the Japanese reading of his last name, Hachisuka, where hachi means bee.
Throughout the series, Chooki maintains key relationships with his fellow Knights. He works closely with Guren Nash as a responsible and dependable partner, while his friendship with Toxsa Dalton is marked by good natured annoyance and mutual respect, as seen when Toxsa gives him a lucky charm from Mr. White's gumball machine that helps restore his confidence. He also has a cousin named Kiiro, and it is mentioned that he owns both a cat and a dog.
Chooki undergoes notable development as the series progresses. Initially, he is skeptical about the need for teamwork, believing that the four Knights can operate effectively on their own, but he eventually changes his mind and recognizes the value of fighting together. His confidence sometimes swells after victories, leading to overconfidence, though he is capable of admitting when the team has been too full of themselves. During a battle, Chooki is hit by a War Stallions Jinx Cannon while saving Toxsa, which causes him to become clumsy and unable to perform any task correctly. He decides to bench himself until a solution is found, but Toxsas gift of a lucky charm and his encouragement motivate Chooki to return to Quarton. Through this experience, he overcomes the jinx and unlocks his Titan Mode, becoming the third Knight to achieve this powerful transformation. In Titan Mode, he enlarges to roughly twice his normal size, and his shield transforms into a large shuriken that he can use both offensively and defensively. Later, after unlocking Elemental Mode, he becomes known as Lydendor Tenkai Lightning Strike.
