Description
Hatsuna Wakabayashi is a magician who escaped from the research laboratory that created her, eventually joining the group of other escapees living at the old observatory. She possesses brown hair that she keeps in a short style with a side ponytail tied by a blue ribbon, and she has dark blue eyes. Her height is recorded as 160 centimeters.

Hatsuna has a personality marked by a deep distrust of ordinary humans, a trait that stems from a past experience of betrayal. She once had a human friend who, after witnessing Hatsuna use her powers to regenerate from being sliced in half, ran away in fear, calling her ability disgusting. This event made her wary of placing her trust in non-magicians. She is also shown to be blunt, mischievous, and remarkably straightforward, with a tendency to be flirtatious once she warms up to someone. Despite her initial skepticism, she can become quickly infatuated, showing little modesty in her actions.

Her primary motivation for seeking out the Astronomy Club was the need for the life-sustaining death-suppressant pills that all magicians require to avoid a fatal, monstrous transformation. Having lost most of her supply, she sought refuge with other magicians rumored to be living together. Upon meeting the group, she was initially surprised and doubtful that they would place their trust in a human boy, Ryouta Murakami. To test his character, she devised a dangerous scenario where she pretended to be stuck atop a radio tower, tricking him into climbing up to rescue her. When she deliberately fell, Ryouta refused to let go of her hand even to save his own life, an act of selflessness that deeply moved her. His willingness to risk everything for her shattered her distrust, causing her to develop strong feelings for him and even ask him to be her boyfriend, stealing his first kiss.

Within the story, Hatsuna serves as a supporting protagonist and the final magical escapee to join the Astronomy Club. Her role is largely defined by her unique power, which makes her a crucial asset to the group. Her most significant relationships develop with Ryouta, whom she loves, and later with a boy named Takaya Garou. She also shares a bond with the other magicians, displaying little modesty around them as well. Her dynamic with Neko Kuroha is notably competitive, with Neko reacting with jealous rage when Hatsuna kissed Ryouta.

Throughout her development, Hatsuna evolves from a cynical survivor unwilling to rely on others into a loyal and vital member of her new family. She endures extreme physical trauma multiple times, being sliced in half, shattered into pieces, and even suffering a complete physical death. Despite these horrors, she continues to risk herself to heal her friends. Her most dramatic development occurs late in the story, when Kana Tachibana has a foresight of Hatsuna "hatching" into a monster and killing Takaya, a boy who had just confessed his love for her. Despite efforts to prevent it, the transformation occurs, and Hatsuna loses control. However, in a unique event, her source of power regenerates and she returns to her human body, subsequently using her abilities to revive Takaya from the brink of death, finally accepting his confession and beginning a relationship with him.

Hatsuna's notable ability is her magic of regeneration. She is capable of regenerating her entire body from virtually any physical injury, even from being reduced to just her lower legs or having her head destroyed. This power is so potent that she can effectively return from a state of clinical death as long as her Harness, the device that suppresses her magic, remains intact and she continues to take her death-suppressant pills. Furthermore, she can use her ability to heal or even resurrect other people, as she does with both Ryouta and a fellow magician named Kazumi Schlierenzauer. However, healing others carries a severe drawback, causing her own body to melt into a near-liquid state. While this melting can incapacitate her, it is not fatal, and she can fully regenerate once the effect wears off. Her incredible regenerative powers, both for herself and for others, make her one of the most resilient characters.
