Description
Henrietta Akaba, also known as Himika Akaba, is the chairwoman of the Leo Institute of Dueling in Paradise City of the Standard Dimension. She is the wife of Leo Akaba and the mother of Declan Akaba. Her history is defined by her husband's sudden abandonment, as Leo left the family and his corporation without any explanation to pursue his own goals in the Fusion Dimension. This event left her to manage the Leo Corporation alone and fueled a deep-seated resentment that would shape her actions for years to come.
In her role as chairwoman, Henrietta is a diligent, level-headed, and fiercely dedicated businesswoman. She is deeply protective of the Leo Institute of Dueling's reputation and will go to extreme lengths to nourish and defend its status and standards. While she can be kind to those she favors, she is also ruthless toward potential enemies or anyone she does not care about, a trait that can extend even to her own family. Her calm and collected exterior often masks a strict, uncompromising individual who views dueling as a tool for business expansion and strategic advantage rather than solely for entertainment or sport. The pain from her husband's abandonment is a core motivation for her, as she subsequently agreed to aid her son, Declan, in opposing Leo's plans for the four dimensions.
Henrietta's primary motivation is twofold: to protect and expand the influence of the Leo Institute of Dueling, and to oppose her estranged husband's ambitions. Her role in the story begins in earnest when she attempts to acquire the You Show Duel School. She uses an incident where Yuya Sakaki was falsely accused of attacking a student as a pretext to challenge the school to a duel, with the prize being ownership of You Show. Her goal was to incorporate Yuya's unique Pendulum Summoning into LID's curriculum to make the institute even more successful. This event marked her emergence as an early antagonist. Later, after learning of the threat from the Fusion Dimension, she works closely with Declan to form the Lancers, an elite duelist task force, and helps orchestrate the defense of Paradise City during the Arc League Championship and the subsequent invasion.
Henrietta's key relationships are complex and often strained. Her relationship with her son, Declan, is one of mutual respect and strategic partnership, as they share the common goal of counteracting Leo. She trusts Declan's judgment and supports his plans, such as the city-wide Battle Royal to fend off invaders. Her relationship with her adopted daughter, Riley Akaba, is particularly troubled. Henrietta found Riley alone in a war-ravaged city and adopted her, but her intentions were initially cold and utilitarian. She had tests run on Riley and concluded the child would be a perfect duel soldier due to having no "sense of self," intending to use her as a mindless weapon against her husband, a plan Declan found uncomfortable. Her relationship with her husband, Leo, is defined by his abandonment and her subsequent desire to defy him.
Throughout the series, Henrietta undergoes significant character development. Her cold, utilitarian view of Riley softens considerably after the final battle against Z-ARC. Following the conflict, which results in Riley being turned into an infant, Henrietta is stricken with guilt over her earlier intentions to use the child as a weapon. She becomes obsessed with returning Riley's smile and is horrified at the possibility that the girl might live with an irreparable fate, finally seeing her as a beloved daughter rather than a tool. This shift from a ruthless businesswoman and schemer to a guilt-ridden, caring mother figure represents her most notable growth.
While Henrietta is a capable executive and strategist, she is not depicted as a duelist in the anime. Her abilities lie in management, corporate maneuvering, and manipulation. She is skilled at acquiring rival duel schools and using the Leo Institute's resources to research and monopolize new summoning methods. Her notable talents include her strategic mind, which she uses to help Declan plan defenses against interdimensional threats, and her ability to remain composed and authoritative under pressure.
