TV-Series
Description
Frederick is a student at the You Show Duel School and a close friend of the protagonist, Yuya Sakaki. He is known as Futoshi Harada in the original Japanese version of the anime. As one of Yuya’s most loyal supporters, Frederick is often seen alongside his two best friends, Allie and Tate, forming a trio that makes up the school’s most enthusiastic cheering squad.
Frederick is an overweight boy with a cheerful and expressive face. He has orange eyes and short, spiky brown hair with darker shades on the sides. His outfit is designed for the Action Duels he admires, consisting of a short-sleeved yellow hoodie featuring a red bear face pattern on the stomach, worn over a red shirt. He pairs this with large orange cargo shorts held up by aqua and black suspenders, matching wristbands, white socks, and specialized shoes with yellow tongues and grip pads. In the English dub, he speaks with a soft German accent and often uses German words or references to Germanic food, a trait that helps distinguish him from his friends.
Personality-wise, Frederick is defined by his boundless energy and unwavering optimism. He is famously known for getting the shivers, an excited physical reaction he experiences at dramatic turning points in a Duel, especially when a friend like Yuya manages to turn the tables on an opponent. He is a self-proclaimed number one fan of Yuya Sakaki and consistently believes in his idol’s abilities, even when Yuya struggles to perform a Pendulum Summon. His role within the group is primarily that of a supporter; he is loyal, enthusiastic, and deeply cares about the well-being of his friends. Despite his cheerful exterior, he can become extremely distressed when his friends are in danger, as seen when he was taken hostage and nearly fell from a high tower.
Frederick’s primary motivation is to become the best duelist he can be while enjoying the entertainment aspect of Dueling. He is inspired by Yuya’s style of Duels as performances meant to bring smiles to the audience. He attends the You Show Duel School to hone his skills and hopes to one day be a fantastic dueltainer himself. His love for Dueling is matched by his love for cheering others on, and he finds deep satisfaction in supporting his friends from the sidelines as much as he does in competing.
In the story, Frederick serves as a representation of the young, aspirational student body at You Show Duel School. Early on, he, Allie, and Tate are taken hostage by the bully Shingo Sawatari to pressure Yuya into a Duel, demonstrating his role as a motivating factor for the protagonist. He actively participates in the Maiami Championship, entering the Junior division. While he is not a primary fighter, he achieves a notable victory, easily winning his first Duel against an opponent named Takeshi Shimizu. His run in the tournament ends when he faces Layra Akaba (known as Riley Akaba in the Japanese version) and loses to a Synchro Summon. Beyond his own Duels, he is a constant presence in the audience, cheering for Yuya, Allie, and others throughout the tournament and into later story arcs involving the Fusion and Synchro Dimensions.
Frederick’s key relationships are central to his character. He shares a very close bond with his fellow students Allie and Tate; the three are almost always seen together, forming a tight-knit support group. His most important relationship is with Yuya Sakaki. Frederick looks up to Yuya immensely, not just as a student looks up to a senior, but as a fan who is deeply inspired by his mentor's Dueltaining philosophy. He is also a student of Yuzu Hiragi’s father, Shuzo, the master of the You Show Duel School.
Throughout the series, Frederick experiences a degree of development as he transitions from a pure spectator to a participating competitor. While he remains a cheerful supporter, his participation in the Maiami Championship forces him to rely on his own skills. He shows maturity by declining Yuya’s request for a practice Duel for the Junior Youth Championship, correctly stating that as a Junior division member, his Duel with Yuya would be invalid. Later in the series, when the dimensional war escalates and the true nature of the Supreme King Dragon is revealed, Frederick, like his friends, is confronted with the darker sides of Dueling, which challenges his previously sheltered and optimistic worldview.
Regarding notable abilities, Frederick uses a Doodle Deck, known as a Sketch Deck in some versions, which focuses on beatdown tactics. His ace monster is Doodle Beast Tyranno (or Sketch Beast Tyrano). This powerful monster allows him to tribute a single Doodle Beast to summon it, and upon being successfully Tribute Summoned, it can destroy an opponent’s monster and gain half of that monster’s attack points, enabling a powerful direct attack. His strategy relies on using other cards to protect his monsters, ensuring he can successfully summon his ace. He demonstrates solid competence in battle, as shown by his easy victory in the championship, proving that his skills, while not extraordinary, are effective.
