TV-Series
Description
Julia Krystal, known as Masumi Kotsu in the original Japanese version, is a student at the Leo Institute of Dueling, where she serves as the representative for the Fusion Summoning course. She is a teenage girl with a distinctive appearance, marked by her dark skin tone, shoulder-length black hair, and red eyes. Her typical outfit consists of a small blue shirt with her LID badge pinned on it, worn over a cream one-piece long-sleeved shirt and shorts combination, with black skin-tight shorts underneath and blue boots. She carries her Duel Disk in a brown holster that resembles a firearm.
Julia has a direct, straightforward, and bold personality, showing little hesitation in speaking her mind. Her father works as a jeweler, and having grown up witnessing and appraising the value of gems, she has developed a keen ability to detect talent and hesitation in others, a skill she often demonstrates in her assessments of fellow Duelists. While she can come across as mocking, her observations are usually accurate, and her behavior stems from sharp observation rather than plain arrogance. She is not easily fooled, as shown when she doubted the LID Elites' fabricated story about her teacher, Professor Marco, and chose to seek the truth for herself. Despite her confident and bold exterior, she can be visibly unnerved, such as when she first encountered Shay Obsidian and saw the destruction his monsters had caused.
Julia is also deeply caring, especially towards her friends and teachers. She values her friendships with her fellow LID students, Dipper O'rion and Kit Blade, and often teases Dipper about his losses, though she clearly cares for him. After Professor Marco's disappearance, she became frantic in her attempts to find him. Her concern for Marco is particularly strong, and she does not tolerate any insults directed at him.
Her primary motivation early in the series is to defend her school's honor and to find her missing teacher. She is initially dismissive of the You Show Duel School, but after her experiences with them, her perspective broadens. In the story, Julia is first introduced as one of three LID representatives sent to Duel members of the You Show Duel School as retaliation for an alleged attack. Her first major Duel is against Zuzu Boyle, whom she defeats by using an OTK strategy with her Gem-Knight monsters. She later becomes fixated on confronting the Dark Duelists she believes are responsible for attacking LID students and her teacher, leading her to pursue Shay and Yuto. During a confrontation, she and her friends are easily defeated by Shay, and their memories of the event are rewritten to make them believe Shay was always a member of LID.
Throughout the Arc League Championship, Julia's role expands as she becomes a rival to Zuzu. She loses a hard-fought rematch against Zuzu in the tournament but shows her respect and growth by gifting Zuzu her Crystal Rose card, telling Zuzu that she would not accept her losing in the tournament. Her key relationships include her friendships with Dipper and Kit, her rivalry with Zuzu, and her deep concern for Professor Marco.
Julia's character shows development as she moves from a confident but somewhat arrogant LID elite to a Duelist who shows respect for her opponents and acknowledges her own limitations. Her defeat at the hands of Shay humbles her, and her loss to Zuzu in the tournament is met with grace, as she publicly supports Zuzu's continued success. By the end of the series, after Z-ARC's defeat, her memories of cross-dimensional events are lost, but she continues to be present as a spectator for key Duels.
As a Duelist, Julia is an expert in Fusion Summoning and uses a Gem-Knight Deck, a choice inspired by her father's profession as a jeweler. Her strategies often focus on performing an OTK (One Turn Kill). Her signature ace monster is Gem-Knight Master Diamond, which she later replaces with Gem-Knight Lady Brilliant Diamond. A common tactic involves copying the effects of Gem-Knight Topaz or Gem-Knight Lady Lapis Lazuli with Master Diamond to inflict massive damage. She also uses cards like Brilliant Fusion and Crystal Rose to facilitate quick Fusion Summons, overcoming the drawbacks of her cards by collecting Action Cards during Duels.
