Description
Gong Strong, known as Noboru Gongenzaka in the original Japanese version, is a central character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. He is introduced as an old and loyal friend of the protagonist, Yuya Sakaki. Physically, Gong is highly distinctive among his peers. Though he is only fourteen years old, he possesses a large, muscular, and stocky frame that makes him comparable in size to many adults. His most notable features include black hair styled into a large pompadour held in place by a red band, a somewhat reddish nose, and a constant blush on his cheeks. His typical attire consists of a Paradise Prep School jacket worn as a vest over a buttoned white coat with golden trim, white pants, and heavy traditional sandals. He also wears a white sash crossed over his back, a symbol of his family's dojo and his personal code of honor.
Gong's personality is a blend of gruff pride, a short temper, and profound loyalty. He often speaks in a polite but forceful manner and has a habit of referring to himself in the third person. His entire worldview is shaped by his devotion to the "Heavystrong" or "Steadfast" Dueling style taught at his family's dojo. This philosophy is the core of his identity, dictating that a true duelist stands their ground and never moves from their chosen spot during a Duel. Consequently, even when participating in Action Duels that involve running across a field to collect special cards, Gong refuses to search for or use Action Cards, placing his absolute faith in his own Deck instead. He is easily irritated by showmanship and disrespect in Dueling, as he finds the use of Duels for illegal bets or personal humiliation to be an offense to his honor. This seriousness, however, is balanced by a deep emotional core. Gong is fiercely protective of his friends, especially Yuya, having stood by him and protected him from bullies following the disappearance of Yuya's father. He is willing to sacrifice his own standing or even his cards to ensure the well-being of others and to fight against injustice.
Gong's primary motivation is to uphold the principles of his Heavystrong Dueling style while supporting Yuya's journey to become an entertainment duelist like his father. As the heir to the Strong Dojo, his personal goal is to prove that his traditional, immobile style is a valid and powerful way to Duel, even in the modern era of Action Duels and new summoning methods. Throughout the story, his role evolves from being Yuya's supportive rival to becoming a key member of the Lancers, an elite group of duelists chosen to fight in an interdimensional war. Despite the critical nature of their mission, Gong's personal priority often remains the safety and unity of his friends, showing that his loyalty is his greatest driving force.
His key relationships are central to his development. His bond with Yuya Sakaki is the most significant; they have been friends since childhood, and their mutual respect pushes both to improve. Gong initially pities Yuya for the struggles he endured, but he comes to see this pity as a weakness that held him back, leading him to seek a more genuine, equal rivalry. Another pivotal relationship is with his father, the master of the Strong Dojo, who embodies the strict traditions of their family. Their dynamic highlights Gong's struggle between honoring the past and finding his own path forward. A significant turning point in Gong's character arc is his Duel against Kit Blade from the Leo Institute of Dueling. The intense match, which ends in a draw, forces Gong to confront the limitations of his style. This encounter, combined with the threats faced by the Lancers, motivates him to evolve. He learns to incorporate Synchro Summoning into his strategy, not as a rejection of his Heavystrong principles, but as an evolution of them, proving that tradition can adapt to survive and thrive.
In terms of abilities, Gong is exceptionally physically strong, a direct result of his Steadfast training. He has demonstrated the ability to withstand direct attacks from solid vision monsters, punch holes through concrete walls, and generate powerful gusts of wind simply by drawing a card. His Dueling style is a perfect reflection of his personality. He uses a "Superheavy Samurai" Deck that contains no Spell or Trap Cards, only monsters. This allows him to utilize the unique abilities of his monsters, many of which can only be activated when his Graveyard is free of Spell and Trap Cards, and also lets him attack from Defense Position using his monsters' high DEF points instead of their ATK points. His signature ace monster is "Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei." By remaining stationary and relying on his monster army, Gong perfectly embodies his stated philosophy: he is not just a duelist, but an immovable object on the field of battle.
