Description
Noboru Gongenzaka is a main character in Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V and a childhood friend of Yuya Sakaki. He attends Maiami Second Junior High School and is deeply devoted to a dueling philosophy he calls the Steadfast style, known in some contexts as the Non-Action or Heavystrong style. This approach demands that he stand perfectly still during a duel and never search for Action Cards, even in an Action Duel. His commitment to this principle reflects his broader sense of honor, discipline, and self-reliance.

Gongenzaka is physically large and muscular, with a stocky build and black hair styled into a pompadour held by a red headband. He typically wears a Paradise Prep School jacket worn as a vest over a white coat with gold trim, white pants, a white sash, and heavy sandals. His personality is gruff, proud, and easily angered, but he speaks politely and holds a strong sense of loyalty to his friends. He often refers to himself as this man, Gong and frames his actions and those of his comrades in terms of manhood. Despite his pride, he is humble enough to request aid when necessary and to congratulate his opponents. He has demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice himself for a team victory and shows little tolerance for injustice or greed, as seen in his disgust toward arenas where duels are used for illegal gambling.

Gongenzaka's background includes training at the Gongenzaka dojo, where his pupils address him as Brother Noboru. The only person who calls him by his given name Noboru is his father. After the disappearance of Yuya's father, Yusho Sakaki, Gongenzaka became a staunch protector of Yuya, defending him from bullies even when the aggressor was a senior member of his own dojo. The two have dueled each other many times over the years, though they never had a serious match until the events of the series.

His motivations are rooted in personal strength, the defense of his friends, and the evolution of his Steadfast philosophy. He is initially satisfied with his static dueling style, but after a draw with Yaiba Todo, he reexamines his outlook and decides to incorporate Synchro Summoning into his deck, seeing it as a way to grow stronger while still honoring his principles. He later becomes one of the Lancers, a team assembled by Reiji Akaba to counter the invasion from the Fusion Dimension's Academia, and fights to protect the Standard Dimension.

Gongenzaka uses a Superheavy Samurai deck, which is highly unusual in that it consists entirely of Monster Cards. He uses no Spell or Trap Cards, instead relying on monster effects that activate from the hand or graveyard. His strategy focuses on high Defense Points; his ace monster, Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei, can attack using its DEF instead of its ATK for damage calculation. After adding Synchro Summoning, his primary ace becomes Superheavy Samurai Warlord Susanowo, which allows him to use the effects of Spell Cards from his opponent's graveyard, thereby circumventing his own lack of Spells. He also uses Superheavy Samurai Ogre Shutendoji to clear the opponent's Spells and Traps. Later in the series, he gains Pendulum Monsters and can perform Pendulum-Synchro Summons. Beyond his dueling, Gongenzaka is extraordinarily physically strong, capable of punching through concrete, enduring hits from holographic monsters without losing balance, and executing karate chops that destroy solid projections.

His key relationships include his inseparable bond with Yuya Sakaki, his loyalty to the Lancer team, and his sense of duty toward the students at his dojo. He shows respect for strong opponents and has a noticeable rivalry-turned-respect with Yaiba Todo. Throughout the series, his development revolves around integrating new summoning methods without abandoning the core of his Steadfast style, learning to adapt while remaining true to his character.
