Description
Dennis McField, known as Dennis Mackfield in the Japanese version, is a character from the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V anime who initially appears as an exchange student from the Leo Institute of Dueling's Broadway campus, where he is enrolled in the Xyz Summon course. However, this identity is a cover, as he is in reality an agent of Duel Academy from the Fusion Dimension sent on a reconnaissance mission.
In terms of background, Dennis was dispatched to the Xyz Dimension prior to Duel Academy's full-scale invasion. While posing as a street performer in Heartland, he gathered crowds with his entertaining routines. During this time, he intentionally befriended Lulu Obsidian, a key target of the Academy. After locating her, he authorized the invasion and later revealed the Resistance's base location to his superiors, directly leading to Lulu's capture. During his time in Heartland, he witnessed a performance by the renowned dueltainer Yusho Sakaki, which inspired his own desire to become an entertainer, and he became one of Yusho's students.
Dennis has a distinct and asymmetrical appearance. He has bright curly red hair that hangs to his chin in crumpled spikes, green eyes, and a beauty mark below his right eye. His clothing is unconventional, consisting of a long-sleeved blue collared shirt, a purple bow tie, an orange jacket missing its right sleeve and with a shortened right side, a black glove on his left hand, dark pants, and red shoes. He keeps his Duel Academy pin hidden beneath his collar.
Personality is one of Dennis's most complex traits. On the surface, he is a charismatic, well-rounded individual with a good sense of humor, though he can also be serious. As a great admirer of Yusho Sakaki, he models his dueling style after him, performing as a dueltainer with flashy plays and acrobatic showmanship. He genuinely enjoys entertaining others and seems to value his time with the group he infiltrates. When excited, he can become air-headed and easily distracted, such as when he showed comical frustration while being interrupted during a duel. He also displays a modest side, willingly taking a backseat to let others take the spotlight when he believes they are more suited for it.
Despite this cheerful and sincere facade, Dennis remains loyal to his mission and his home dimension. He demonstrates a pragmatic and somewhat ruthless streak, showing regret but taking no action to prevent others from coming to harm. When his cover is threatened or blown, a much darker side emerges. During his second duel with Shay Obsidian, he becomes noticeably annoyed and angry at being exposed, and his usually cheerful tone transforms into a more maniacal and sadistic one as he declares the start of a hunting game. This reveals a cruelty that matches other Duel Academy agents, as he vows to destroy his opponent slowly.
Dennis's primary motivation stems from his genuine love of entertainment dueling, a passion awakened by Yusho Sakaki. He desires to make people smile through his performances. However, this is constantly in conflict with his role as a spy for the Fusion Dimension, a cause he ultimately remains committed to, even authorizing the devastating invasion of the Xyz Dimension.
Within the story, Dennis plays the role of a double agent. After passing the preliminary rounds of a major tournament, he joins a select group of duelists called the Lancers. While a member, he actively works to thwart the Fusion Dimension's immediate plans to maintain his cover, even helping the protagonist, Yuya Sakaki. However, he secretly guides the enemy forces and relays critical information to them. His true allegiance is eventually revealed, cementing him as an antagonist from the Fusion Dimension.
Key relationships define Dennis's journey. He idolizes Yusho Sakaki and holds a deep admiration for his son, Yuya, whom he actively supports in an early duel. He forms a camaraderie with other Lancers before his betrayal. He has a specific connection to his associate, Yuri, and is shown to be on friendly, cooperative terms with him. His most personal conflict is with Shay Obsidian, an Xyz Dimension duelist whose sister, Lulu, Dennis helped capture. Their duels are highly charged, forcing Dennis to reveal his true, malicious nature.
Dennis undergoes notable development. He begins as an entertaining ally, but after his exposure, he fully embraces his role as a villain. Ultimately, following a final defeat, he is confronted by his idol, Yusho, who offers him redemption and a chance to rejoin the Lancers. Feeling overwhelming guilt for his betrayal, Dennis refuses. He then performs what he calls his last show, using his duel disk to turn himself into a card as an act of self-inflicted punishment, fulfilling a promise and providing key information as a final good deed.
Regarding notable abilities, Dennis is an exceptionally skilled and versatile duelist. While his allegiance is to the Fusion Dimension, his signature Deck is the Performage (Entermage) archetype, which focuses on swarming the field and manipulating effect damage. He is proficient in multiple summoning methods, demonstrating mastery over Xyz Summoning and Pendulum Summoning to hide his identity, and eventually revealing his ability to perform Fusion Summoning as well. His ace monster is Performage Trapeze Magician, an Xyz Monster that visually resembles Yusho Sakaki's own monster and is a monster he holds in great personal regard.
