Description
Noburu Gongenzaka is a main character in Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. He is a childhood friend of Yuya Sakaki and a student at Maiami Second Junior High School. His family runs a dojo, which likely instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and tradition. Gongenzaka duels using the Non-Action or Steadfast style, also called the Heavystrong style, which means that even when competing in an Action Duel, he refuses to search for Action Cards, instead standing firmly in one spot to rely on his own power. This reflects his deep pride in his own strength and his belief in self-reliance. He can be quick to anger, but he generally speaks politely and is caring and protective of those close to him. In the Japanese version he often refers to himself as the man, Gongenzaka, emphasizing his strong sense of masculine honor. Despite his pride, he is not above asking for help when needed and is always willing to congratulate a worthy opponent. He has demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of a team victory. His defining trait is a stubborn commitment to his principles, but he also grows from his experiences. After a draw against Yaiba Tōdō, Gongenzaka's outlook on his own strength changes, and he learns to accept that growth can come from defeat and cooperation. When he learns of the invasion plot by Academia from the Fusion Dimension, he volunteers to become one of Reiji Akaba's Lancers, fighting to protect his home dimension. Throughout the series, he maintains his steadfast philosophy but develops a broader understanding of when to stand firm and when to adapt. Gongenzaka uses a Superheavy Samurai deck, a series of Earth-attribute Machine-type monsters that rely on having no Spell or Trap cards in the Graveyard to activate their effects. His monsters often have very high defense points and can attack while in defense position, using their defense as attack power. This deck style perfectly matches his immovable, ground-based approach to dueling. His key relationships include his close bond with Yuya Sakaki, whom he supports as a friend and rival, and his camaraderie with the other Lancers, notably Yaiba Tōdō. Gongenzaka remains a steadfast presence in the series, embodying strength, honor, and the value of unwavering resolve.
