Description
Hartia is a young sorcerer who trained alongside the protagonist Orphen at the Tower of Fang, a prestigious and secretive school for magic. He is roughly the same age as Orphen, and during their years as students, the two were very close friends. While Orphen was considered a prodigy with immense natural talent, Hartia was seen as the dedicated second-place student, possessing less innate ability but compensating with diligent practice. His magical skill is nonetheless considerable, and he was noted to have been among the top of his class. Within the Tower, Hartia became the apprentice of the powerful master sorcerer Childman, a position that signifies the great trust his teacher placed in him.

In terms of personality, Hartia is fundamentally a caring and loyal individual who is deeply concerned about the well-being of those he considers friends. He is a good-natured person, but he also has an eccentric and somewhat clumsy side that often prevents him from expressing himself clearly or effectively. A strong sense of duty and obedience to his master, Childman, frequently conflicts with his enduring friendship for Orphen. This internal struggle defines much of his role in the story. Unlike Orphen, who openly rebels against the Tower of Fang, Hartia chooses to remain by Childman's side, believing that his master's intentions, though secretive, are ultimately righteous.

One of Hartia's most unusual and defining traits is his adoption of a secret identity as a costumed vigilante he calls the Black Tiger. Based on a beloved character from a childhood comic book, this alter ego sees Hartia donning a black mask and cape, riding a summoned giant black bull, and wielding a scythe. He takes this persona very seriously, often delivering dramatic and theatrical introductions when confronting others in disguise. However, his attempts at concealment are frequently ineffective, with Orphen easily recognizing him. The disguise inadvertently becomes a source of humor for Orphen's companions, who mockingly refer to him as Shrimp Man due to a mispronunciation or misinterpretation of his alias.

Hartia's primary motivation is to protect Orphen from what he perceives as a suicidal path. He is aware of deeper truths concerning the incident that drove Orphen from the Tower, including the true nature of Childman's plan to save Azalie, the woman Orphen is trying to rescue. Hartia feels he cannot reveal this information directly because he fears the knowledge would lead Orphen to take even more dangerous and self-destructive actions. Consequently, he often finds himself in the difficult position of working against Orphen's goals on the surface while secretly trying to avert a fatal confrontation between Orphen and Childman. His role in the story is that of an intermediary and a reluctant antagonist, someone who is forced to clash with his old friend in the hope of ultimately preventing greater tragedy.

Throughout the narrative, Hartia demonstrates development as he becomes increasingly torn between his oaths to the Tower and his loyalty to his friend. While he initially tries to stop Orphen out of a sense of duty and a belief that he knows what is best, he eventually takes greater risks to provide Orphen with crucial information and aid. He approaches Orphen's companions, such as Cleao, in his guise as the Black Tiger, hoping they can convince Orphen that their goals are ultimately the same. In significant confrontations, Hartia shows a willingness to disobey Childman's direct orders, risking his own position and safety to warn Orphen. As the situation becomes more desperate, he finally reveals the secrets he has been keeping, becoming a key source of information that helps Orphen understand the full scope of the conspiracy.

As a sorcerer, Hartia specializes in black magic. His known abilities include powerful fire-based spells, the ability to summon lightning, and a spell called Dark which envelops a target in total, impenetrable darkness. While his power is acknowledged, Orphen remains his superior in magical combat. In his role as the Black Tiger, he also rides a summoned black bull and wields a scythe that possesses the unusual property of being able to reflect magical spells, making him a surprisingly resilient opponent to other sorcerers.
