Description
Childman Powderfield is a master sorcerer from the Tower of Fang, widely recognized as one of the most powerful black magic users on the continent. He serves as the instructor for an elite class at the Tower, where he takes in gifted students to train them in the magical arts.

In his role as a teacher, Childman is known for his reserved and emotionally detached demeanor, communicating directly and with minimal expression to conceal his secrets. His teaching methodology is highly calculated and designed to break conventional expectations. He deliberately assigns students skills that contradict their inherent personalities, training the pacifist Krylancelo, who later becomes Orphen, in assassination techniques, teaching the attention-seeking Hartia to serve as an assistant, and instructing the battle-averse Leticia in combat survival. He believes that to find an opponent's weakness and exploit it is more effective than competing in direct strength, as the latter will lead to downfall. One of his specialized techniques is the Mind Set method, which involves confronting profound fears to achieve mental calm during high-stress scenarios.

Childman personally takes in three orphans from Rain Dust: Krylancelo, Azalie Cait Sith, and Leticia MacCready. He raises them as his apprentices, and Krylancelo, in particular, inherits Childmans title as Successor of Razor Edge, excelling in close-quarters combat, dagger techniques, and mental defenses. His students include seven in total: Krylancelo, Azalie, Hartia, Leticia, Comicron, Korugon, and Forte, five of whom eventually attain senior sorcerer status.

The central tragedy of Childmans life revolves around an experiment involving the Sword of Baltanders. When he and Azalie conduct this forbidden experiment, it goes disastrously wrong, transforming Azalie into the monstrous dragon known as Bloody August. The Tower of Fang covers up the incident, declaring Azalie dead and staging a false funeral, but Childman confiscates the sword and hides it within the mansion of Ekintora Everlasting. Contrary to what his student Orphen believes, Childman never intends to kill Azalie. He secretly works toward the goal of returning her to her former state and authorizes hunting parties to pursue her not out of malice, but to efficiently locate her using the Tower's resources while pretending to obey orders to eliminate her.

The situation becomes even more complicated when a physically exhausted Azalie uses white magic to forcibly switch bodies with Childman. Azalie inhabits Childmans body while his own soul becomes trapped within the monstrous form of Bloody August. In this draconic state, Childman becomes disoriented and mentally unstable, yet he continues to seek the Sword of Baltanders at Ekintoras mansion in hopes of reversing his condition, a plan that Azalie resents given his previous claims that such a reversal was impossible.

When Orphen encounters what he believes is his master opposing him, he is actually facing Azalie in Childmans body. The truth eventually comes to light through Hartias investigations, forcing Orphen to confront the consequences of Azalies choices and shifting his focus beyond simply saving her. Childmans ultimate fate is tragic, he succumbs to his injuries and dies by Azalies hand while still trapped in the dragon body. Some adaptations depict an alternate resolution where Childmans soul is implanted into Azalies uterus using the power of the Sword of Baltanders and reincarnates as her child following the dragon forms destruction.

Beyond his present-day story, Childman has a deeper history as a person from two centuries ago, with his real name being Alfred Mines. He is the son and favorite disciple of a figure named Estashiba and acted as a liaison between different races. He trained his students not only in magic but to become an organization capable of fighting transcendent beings such as vampires and goddesses, imparting different specialized skills to each student including assassination techniques, combat survival, medical knowledge, and network management.

In combat, Childman wields formidable black magic spells with devastating effects. His repertoire includes Demon, which solidifies atmospheric pressure to crush targets; I spin, the armor of our halo, which generates defensive heat-emitting rings; Leap, which creates concussive invisible blasts; and Light, which forms explosive V-shaped arrows of energy. He also developed proprietary spells like Spatial Transitioning, a teleportation-like ability guarded as a Tower secret. His combat prowess extends beyond sorcery to incorporate refined assassination techniques and physical combat skills that are later inherited by his student Orphen.
