Description
Nagi is a bounty hunter of considerable reputation who appears in the anime series Tenchi Universe. She is introduced as the arch-rival of the space pirate Ryoko and is known throughout the galaxy for her effectiveness in capturing or eliminating wanted criminals. Little is revealed about Nagi's origins or early life. She has long blue hair and red eyes, and her appearance includes pointed ears and a distinctive mark on her cheek that resembles Jurai battle tattoos, though her exact species is not specified. She travels and fights alongside her cabbit companion, Ken-Ohki, who is male and capable of transforming into a spaceship.
Personality-wise, Nagi is competitive, single-minded, and driven by a strong sense of personal pride. She views her bounty-hunting work as a matter of record and honor, and she is deeply obsessed with capturing Ryoko, the only target who has ever evaded her. This fixation dominates much of her behavior and choices throughout the series. Despite her ruthless reputation, Nagi adheres to a personal code of fairness. She refuses to fight an injured or weakened opponent, as she values facing her rivals at their best. She also becomes angry when she feels rules or agreements have been broken, such as when Ryoko avoids a confrontation or when someone interferes in her battles.
Nagi's primary motivation is to restore her perfect capture record by bringing in Ryoko. This goal drives her to track Ryoko across the galaxy, and she is unwilling to let any other bounty hunter claim her target. She also seems motivated by a desire for challenge and competition, often describing her combats with Ryoko as fun. While she insists that she and Ryoko are not friends, her actions indicate a complicated grudging respect. She steps in to help Ryoko and the rest of the Masaki group during the final confrontation against the false emperor Kagato, primarily because she does not want anyone else to be the one to defeat Ryoko.
In the story, Nagi first appears after learning that Ryoko is hiding on Earth. Mistaking Tenchi Masaki for Ryoko's fiancé, Nagi kidnaps him to lure Ryoko into a confrontation. The resulting battle is interrupted when the cabbits, Ken-Ohki and Ryo-Ohki, fall in love and refuse to fight each other. Washu arranges a western-style duel on Venus, where Nagi and Ryoko fight to a near-conclusion before being stopped by the cabbits. Nagi later crosses paths with the Masaki group several times while they are on the run from the Jurai military and the Galaxy Police. These encounters range from a brief visit to a bar the group operates to a beachside resort where Nagi enters a swimsuit competition to spite Ryoko and wins, only for Ryoko to steal the prize money. Nagi's final and most significant appearance comes at the old Jurai vacation palace. With Ayeka captured and Ryoko gravely injured by Kagato, Nagi refuses to take advantage of Ryoko's condition. Instead, at Ken-Ohki's urging, she helps the group by acting as a decoy against the Jurai fleet while Tenchi and the others rescue Ayeka. After successfully blasting her pursuers, Nagi flees into space, still unaware that Ryoko has returned to Earth and continues her search for her rival.
Key relationships define Nagi's role in the series. Her central dynamic is with Ryoko, a space pirate with immense supernatural power. The two have fought many times, and Nagi's obsession with capturing her forms the core of her character arc. Nagi's relationship with her cabbit Ken-Ohki is one of partnership and mutual reliance, though Ken-Ohki's love for Ryo-Ohki sometimes complicates Nagi's plans. Nagi also interacts with Tenchi Masaki briefly as a hostage early in the series and later encounters other members of the group, such as Ayeka and Washu, in passing.
Nagi's development is subtle but present. She begins as a single-minded pursuer of Ryoko, willing to use any means necessary to capture her. Over the course of the series, her actions reveal a sense of honor and a capacity for selfless assistance, even if she frames it in terms of her own rivalry. By the end, she refuses to fight Ryoko when she is injured and instead helps her escape, showing that her pride as a hunter includes a commitment to fair competition.
Unlike many characters in the series, Nagi does not possess any inherent superhuman abilities. She relies entirely on advanced technology and her personal combat skills. Her primary weapons include an energy sword and a whip, and she is a highly skilled fighter. Her cabbit, Ken-Ohki, serves as both a ship and a combat partner, capable of space travel and energy-based attacks.
