TV-Series
Description
In the Tenchi Universe continuity, Azaka is one half of a pair of legendary knights from the planet Jurai, the other being his partner Kamidake. The characters seen for most of the series are actually the personalities of these two ancient warriors downloaded into a pair of floating, log-shaped robotic guardians that serve Princess Ayeka. These guardian units are crafted from the wood of a Royal Tree of Jurai, which accounts for their distinctive appearance. Azaka is distinguished from his partner by the blue Juraian script written on his body, and he is typically understood to be the older and more senior of the two.

Within the story, Azaka and Kamidake are discovered in a state of suspended animation, and their return to activity is a significant event. The two guardians are fiercely loyal and dedicated to their duty of protecting the Juraian royal family, particularly Princess Ayeka and her younger sister Sasami. Azaka is portrayed as kind, wise, and serious about his responsibilities as a protector, consistently upholding his code of honor and chivalry. Despite their ancient origins and immense power, their day-to-day existence is often quiet; they are frequently seen stationed outside Tenchi Masaki's home, acting as gatekeepers and occasionally engaging in mundane or even unsettling activities like conversing with each other or startling visitors.

Azaka and Kamidake serve as powerful allies and guardians for the main characters throughout the majority of Tenchi Universe. Their primary role is to accompany Princess Ayeka on her journey and to defend her against threats. However, their most crucial function is revealed near the climax of the series. They are not merely robotic servants but also vessels containing the essence of the legendary knights whose names they bear. When the heroes launch a final assault on the Jurai Royal Palace to confront the villain Kagato, the original knights are resurrected. Yosho, an elder member of the Jurai royal family, uses his energy to draw the knights' consciousnesses out of the log guardians and transfer them into their original, humanoid bodies. In this revived form, the knight Azaka assists Tenchi by battling against Kagato's dark knights, including a corrupted counterpart named Tetta, allowing Tenchi to proceed to the final confrontation.

Throughout this ordeal, Azaka demonstrates his profound sense of duty and honor. During his battle with Tetta, he proves that while his opponent may match him in power, he lacks the true chivalry and spirit of a real knight, which ultimately leads to Azaka's victory at great personal cost to his own strength. After Kagato is defeated and peace is restored, the log guardians of Azaka and Kamidake are reactivated by the genius scientist Washu. The knights themselves, having fulfilled their purpose, appear to become the personal guardians of the younger princess, Sasami, while the reactivated log forms presumably return to their duties as well. This represents a complete arc for Azaka, transitioning from a dormant legend to a revived warrior, and finally to a resting state where his legacy continues through the guardians that still serve the royal family.

Azaka possesses several notable abilities. In their log guardian forms, both he and Kamidake can hover and fly, generate powerful energy barriers for defense, and fire laser-based attacks. They can also absorb matter, a power used to imprison foes. In their resurrected humanoid knight forms, they wield significant combat prowess, capable of firing powerful energy blasts and engaging in melee combat with formidable opponents like the dark knights. Azaka specifically can launch devastating finishing attacks that require a great expenditure of energy. Despite their strength, it is noted that their powers, whether in guardian or knight form, are not as great as the power held by the Royal Trees of Jurai, the source of the royal family's ultimate might.
