TV-Series
Description
Emi, whose full name is Emi Natsuno, is one of the two main protagonists. She is a Japanese middle-school student who, along with her friend Yuko, is suddenly and mysteriously transported from her ordinary life to a strange and unfamiliar world. Upon arrival, Emi finds herself in a land where the native inhabitants are no taller than her knees, making her a giant in comparison. These diminutive people, who resemble chubby toddlers or gnome-like creatures, come to believe that Emi and Yuko are the legendary Great Protectors, summoned by their princess to save their village of Bellgazle from a devastating war.

Emi’s personality is initially defined by her reluctance and denial. She and Yuko are two ordinary girls who have no desire to be heroes or to fight in someone else's conflict. Their primary motivation is simply to find a way back home to their normal lives, and they struggle to accept the gravity of the situation they have been thrust into. However, as the series progresses, Emi is shown taking more active and decisive roles. In one instance, after a nighttime raid by the Valgidan army leads to the capture of her friends, Emi escapes and forms a plan to rescue them, demonstrating her growing resourcefulness and courage. She follows the captives from a distance and later attempts a daring rescue, showcasing her determination to protect those close to her, even when the odds are against them.

Within the story, Emi’s role is complex. While the natives see her as a savior, she is in reality a confused and frightened teenager. This central conflict drives the narrative, as she and Yuko are forced to navigate a brutal war they never asked to be part of, with both sides, the Glianians and the Valgidans, trying to manipulate them for their own strategic advantage. Emi’s key relationships are primarily with her fellow earthling, Yuko, with whom she shares this incredible and harrowing experience. She also forms bonds with the native inhabitants, such as the soldier Shal, and is shown working alongside Shura, Shall’s brother, to rescue their captured companions. Her connection to the magical elements of the world is hinted at when she alone encounters a strange magical being that delivers a mysterious message, a supernatural event that distinguishes her experience from Yuko’s.

Emi demonstrates notable development throughout the series. She evolves from a passive, reluctant participant who denies the reality of her situation into a more active individual who takes initiative and risks her own safety to save her friends. The serious and often grim tone of the war-torn world forces her to confront difficult moral questions and the harsh realities of conflict, indicating a loss of innocence as she is compelled to grow up quickly. In terms of abilities, Emi does not possess any overt superpowers or combat training. Her primary advantage is her large stature relative to the native people, though this proves insufficient against organized armies. Her most notable abilities are her growing problem-solving skills and her determination, as seen when she formulates a rescue plan for her captured friends.
