Description
Kanae Yajima is a high school student and the best friend of the protagonist, Hotaru Tachibana. She serves as a crucial pillar of emotional support and a grounding presence in Hotaru's life, representing the ordinary world from which Hotaru is often detached. One of her most significant roles in the story is being one of the very few people who know that Hotaru is a girl, a secret Hotaru keeps from most of her teammates in the survival game world. Her involvement in the plot is triggered when she is conned out of her money by a host, an incident that leads Hotaru to confront Masamune Matsuoka and ultimately become involved in survival games.

Kanae has a feminine appearance, characterized by her long light pink hair and light brown eyes. She typically wears her school uniform, often complemented by an oversized cardigan, which reflects her soft and girlish personal style. Her personality is lively, feminine, and outwardly spontaneous, which contrasts sharply with Hotaru's more direct and tomboyish nature. While her actions and words can sometimes come across as immature, this is underpinned by a genuine and deep-seated care for the well-being of those around her, particularly Hotaru. She is encouraging and persistent, using her upbeat demeanor to support her friend through difficult times.

Kanae's primary motivation throughout the series is her concern for Hotaru. She frequently encourages Hotaru to act more feminine and dress in a more girly manner, hoping to prevent others from mistaking her for a boy, though this advice often goes unheeded. Beyond appearances, her deeper motivation is to protect Hotaru's emotional and physical health. When she sees that Hotaru is distressed after a loss in a survival game tournament, Kanae becomes worried that the activity is harmful. She takes it upon herself to research survival games to understand what her friend is going through. This concern culminates in a pivotal moment where Hotaru, feeling defeated, decides to quit survival games. Kanae, recognizing how important the game has become to her friend from the tone of her voice, refuses to let her give up. She challenges Hotaru to a series of footraces, deliberately losing every time but never quitting, in order to remind Hotaru of her own philosophy that giving up before trying is uncool. This act of support and friendship successfully reignites Hotaru's determination.

In terms of key relationships, Kanae's bond with Hotaru is the most central and developed in the series. The care between them is mutual; Hotaru is fiercely protective of Kanae, as shown when she angrily confronts the host who took her friend's money. Their friendship is long-standing, having been close since their first year of high school, and Kanae's memory of Hotaru's encouraging words from that time plays a key role in her later efforts to support her. Within the story, Kanae does not participate in survival games and remains an outsider to that world, which allows her to offer a unique perspective. On one occasion, her close relationship with Hotaru leads to a moment of confusion for another character, Masamune Yukimura, who mistakenly assumes Kanae is Hotaru's girlfriend.

Kanae’s character does not undergo a dramatic transformation herself, but she is a vital catalyst for the development of the main character, Hotaru. Her persistent encouragement and challenges help Hotaru navigate her self-doubt and reaffirm her commitment to her goals. In a subtle hint of development for Kanae, after a particularly tender moment where Hotaru wipes mascara from her cheek and calls her cute, Kanae runs off flustered, offering her full support, which may suggest the budding of deeper, potentially romantic, feelings for her best friend that Hotaru remains completely oblivious to.

Notably, Kanae has no special abilities related to combat or survival games, as she never participates in them. Her most notable abilities are social and emotional. In a rare display of physical prowess, she once surprised several boys with her speed, though this is a minor detail in her overall characterization. Her true strength lies in her loyalty, perceptiveness, and her unwavering determination to see her friend happy, even if it means challenging her to a race she knows she cannot win.
