Description
Batte Man, whose real name is Bad, is a professional hero ranked 15th in S-Class within the Hero Association. He is a tall teenager with a youthful but aggressive appearance, characterized by his black hair styled into a pompadour, sharp eyes, and a perpetually displeased expression. He embodies the image of a Japanese bancho, or delinquent leader, wearing a black gakuran uniform over a red turtleneck sweater and carrying a metal baseball bat, which serves as his signature weapon and was specially made by the Hero Association to withstand his immense strength.
Personality-wise, Batte Man is hot-blooded, impulsive, and belligerent. He has a short temper and is prone to anger, readily challenging other heroes or anyone who provokes him. Despite his rough and confrontational demeanor, he is not without a sense of ethics or politeness. He speaks in a very coarse dialect and holds a disdain for rich people and what he perceives as inconsiderate individuals. His primary motivation in battle is a concept he calls fighting spirit, which is the unwavering will to fight without ever giving up. He believes his motivation makes him invincible, and this belief manifests as a genuine ability: the more damage he takes, the stronger and faster he becomes, allowing him to persevere through injuries that would incapacitate others.
His role in the story often places him on the front lines against powerful monsters. He is fearless to the point of recklessness, charging headfirst into combat against any enemy regardless of their threat level. One of his key assignments involves escorting a high-ranking executive of the Hero Association and his son, a task he performs while showing clear disdain for the protective role. His most notable confrontation is against Garou, the Hero Hunter. Their fight is brutal and intense, with Batte Man's increasing fighting spirit making him a formidable opponent despite Garou's superior technique.
The most significant relationship in Batte Man's life is with his younger sister, Zenko. He is deeply attached to her and follows her commands, which often serve to curb his violent instincts. He made a promise to never use violence in her presence, a vow he upholds even when it puts him in danger. During his fight with Garou, he immediately stops fighting when Zenko appears and tells him to, and remarkably, even Garou ceases his attack in response to her plea. Creator commentary has indicated that had Zenko not intervened, Garou likely would have been killed by Batte Man's finishing blow. Beyond his sister, he is also known to be fond of his pet cat, Tama.
In terms of development, Batte Man demonstrates a clear, if simple, tactical mind in combat. He is capable of deducing an enemy's weak point, such as realizing that Elder Centipede's face was vulnerable. After the major conflict with the Monster Association, Batte Man eventually leaves the Hero Association and joins the Neo Heroes, serving as a bodyguard for a former executive named Sekingar. His notable abilities all center on his fighting spirit, which grants him superhuman strength, resilience, and endurance. As he takes damage, his power escalates dramatically, allowing him to injure Dragon-level threats like Elder Centipede and Sage Centipede. His techniques include Dragon Thrashing, a barrage of powerful smacks with his bat, and Savage Tornado, where he spins wildly to strike everything in range. He has also shown incredible willpower, such as hitting himself in the head with his bat to stay awake after being exposed to a soporific gas.
