Description
Melzalgard is a prominent antagonist from the anime One Punch Man, serving as one of the highest-ranking warriors in the Dark Matter Thieves, the alien invasion force led by the tyrant Boros. He is classified as a Dragon level threat, a designation reserved for monsters capable of endangering entire cities, which reflects his immense power and the significant challenge he poses to the Hero Association.

In terms of background, Melzalgard is an alien whose origins are unknown, but his own statements indicate he has lived for well over a century. His primary role in the story takes place during the Alien Conquerors arc, where the Dark Matter Thieves arrive on Earth. He is initially tasked with guarding the exterior of their massive spaceship but soon descends to engage the heroes directly. His attack on the surface is brutal and effective; he immediately dispatches the Sky King with a single blow and later severs the arm of the A-Class hero, Iaian, demonstrating his overwhelming physical dominance.

Physically, Melzalgard is a formidable and disturbing sight. He is a large, muscular humanoid typically depicted with five distinct heads, each possessing its own separate consciousness and personality. His body is composed of a malleable, dark gray substance, and his most terrifying feature is his near-limitless shapeshifting and regenerative ability. He can morph his limbs into a variety of lethal weapons, such as hammers, blades, and spiked clubs, or form wings for flight. His regeneration is directly tied to five small, marble-like cores or orbs located within his body, with one core corresponding to each head. As long as these cores remain intact, Melzalgard can instantly regenerate from virtually any wound, no matter how severe. He can even split his body into five autonomous copies, each with its own head and core, or merge them into a single, more powerful form.

The character is defined by an arrogant and battle-hungry personality. His confidence stems from his unique physiology and his belief that he is effectively immortal. When confronted by strong opponents, he shows excitement and a mocking, boastful demeanor, relishing the challenge. Because he has lived with his five separate personalities for over a hundred years, they work in a strange, chaotic harmony. However, this arrogance becomes his undoing. His key relationships in the story are purely adversarial. He engages in an extended and brutal battle against a team of four S-Class heroes: Atomic Samurai, Bang, Metal Bat, and Puri-Puri Prisoner. He fights them all simultaneously, holding his own for a significant period due to his regeneration, making this one of the more prolonged and even fights in the series.

The development of the battle revolves around the discovery of his weakness. When Metal Bat accidentally destroys one of the orbs while pulverizing a separated head, the heroes realize that destroying these marbles is the only way to truly harm him. From that point on, the heroes shift their strategy from raw offense to targeting the hidden cores. In a moment of desperation, Melzalgard requests fire support from the alien ship, but the bombardment is effortlessly deflected by the psychic S-Class hero Tatsumaki. As his heads are systematically destroyed, his regeneration slows and he becomes more frantic. In his final moments, he attempts to focus purely on offense to kill his opponents, but the heroes exploit a predictable pattern in his regeneration. As he tries to reform his head, Bang catches the last exposed marble and crushes it, finally killing Melzalgard for good.
