Description
Apex is a recurring antagonist and the overarching villain from the animated series. He is the evil overlord and ruler of Planet Pointy-Head, a world inhabited by a race of silver-skinned aliens with distinctively pointed scalps. In terms of appearance, Apex shares the basic physiology of his kind, including a pointy head, silver skin, four tentacle-like legs, and two three-fingered arms. However, he stands out as being far taller than other Pointy Heads, though he is still short in stature when compared to the spherical citizens of Pac-World. He is further distinguished by his dark red pupils, which give him a menacing gaze.
Very little is revealed about Apex's past. What is known is that he hails from Planet Pointy-Head and, at some point prior to the events of the series, hired a bounty hunter known as the Pacinator. He tasked the Pacinator with hunting down and capturing the rare yellow Pac-Worlders, and it is implied that this mission resulted in the capture of many, including the parents of the protagonist, Pac-Man.
Apex's core personality is defined by deception, ambition, and treachery. He presents a facade of peace and goodwill, as seen in his first physical appearance in the episode Robo Woes, where he arrives as a seemingly friendly visitor bearing a gift for President Spheros of Pac-World. This is a ruse, and Apex quickly reveals his true nature as a conqueror, mocking the president and declaring his intention to take over the planet. His primary motivation is the conquest of Pac-World and the enslavement of its people. He is highly intelligent and a skilled schemer, using his cunning to manipulate others to further his own goals.
Within the story, Apex serves as a major external threat to Pac-World, distinct from the usual ghostly menace posed by Lord Betrayus. He is a formidable adversary who nearly succeeds in his invasion attempts on multiple occasions. His role is often that of a manipulator who forms temporary, self-serving alliances. He first arrives in Pac-World under the guise of giving a gift to President Spheros, which is actually a trap meant to help him rule the planet. After being defeated by Pac-Man, he returns in the episode Invasion of the Pointy Heads. There, he strikes a deal with his own rival, Lord Betrayus, proposing that their two armies join forces to conquer Pac-World. True to his treacherous personality, Apex immediately double-crosses Betrayus, attempting to seize control for himself once their combined forces breach the planet's defenses.
Key relationships are defined by this self-serving nature. His primary antagonist is Pac-Man, the hero who consistently thwarts his plans. In a cruel taunt after one of his defeats, Apex hints that he may know the whereabouts of Pac-Man's missing parents, cementing a deeply personal enmity between them. His relationship with Lord Betrayus is purely based on convenience, as the two are rivals who will temporarily cooperate against a common enemy, only to betray one another the moment it becomes advantageous. In the video game adaptation, it is revealed that Apex and Betrayus have been working together in secret, deceiving Pac-Man by lying about who holds his parents captive. Apex is also the leader of a subordinate named Tip, a brawny Pointy Head soldier. However, Apex proves to be an ungrateful and unfair leader, abandoning Tip during a crisis. This act of betrayal causes Tip to question his loyalty and ultimately defect, forming a friendship with Pac-Man instead.
While Apex does not undergo a significant personal transformation, his role and the understanding of his schemes develop over time. He is initially presented as an independent conqueror, but later storylines, particularly in the video games, reveal a deeper level of collaboration with Betrayus, showing that his plots against Pac-World are more intertwined with the series' main ghostly villain than first apparent. His defeats are consistent, yet he remains a recurring and persistent threat, always escaping to fight another day.
Apex possesses a range of notable abilities. He demonstrates powerful energy beams that he can project from his body, specifically when piloting his giant robot. One such power is a telekinesis beam fired from his mouth, which he primarily uses to consume food. Another is a home-sending beam fired from his forehead, which can transport objects or individuals back to where they belong. Beyond his natural powers, Apex is an expert pilot. Like many of his species, he relies heavily on technology, particularly a massive humanoid robot that he controls with great skill. His robot serves as his primary weapon and mode of transportation during his invasions, and its chest opens in a manner reminiscent of the chestburster scene from the Alien film franchise. His greatest asset, however, is his high intelligence, which he uses to devise complex plans for conquest and to expertly operate his war machine.
