Description
Greyworth Ciel Mais is a central character from the light novel and anime series Blade Dance of the Elementalers. She is the current headmistress of Areishia Spirit Academy, a position that involves overseeing the education of young women who form contracts with spirits to become elementalists. Beyond this public role, she also serves as the highest-ranking officer of a covert organization known as the "Dark Side," indicating her influence extends far beyond the academy's walls. Her past is filled with legendary achievements; she was formerly the chief of the Imperial Twelve Knights, known as the "Numbers," a hero of the Second Ranbal War, and the champion of the Blade Dance tournament held twenty-four years before the main story.

In terms of personality, Greyworth is a complex individual. On the surface, she presents herself as a beautiful and charismatic woman with a witty, teasing, and often dominating demeanor. She greatly enjoys provoking and playing tricks on those around her, particularly the protagonist, Kamito Kazehaya, often with a sharp tongue. Despite this outward behavior, she is deeply calculating, pragmatic, and willing to make difficult, even ruthless, decisions to achieve her goals. Her primary motivations are the protection of the empire and the future of the students at her academy. She carries a significant burden of responsibility, having once wished for a world without conflict, a wish that has led her down a complex and morally grey path involving pacts with powerful entities.

Greyworth serves multiple critical functions within the story. She is most notably the sword master and mentor to the protagonist, Kamito, having taught him the "Blade Arts" swordsmanship style that he uses throughout the series. She is the one who enrolls Kamito in the all-female Areishia Academy and tasks him with winning the Blade Dance tournament. Her role extends to that of a strategist and manipulator, often setting events in motion from behind the scenes to guide Kamito and his allies toward fulfilling her larger plans. She acts as a guardian figure to several characters, having taken Claire Rouge under her supervision after the fall of the Elstein family.

Her key relationships are defined by her connection to the past and present. Her bond with the protagonist, Kamito Kazehaya, is the most significant. She is his master in swordsmanship, his former employer who hired him as a "maid" to hide his identity, and eventually the person he comes to regard as a mother figure. Their relationship is a mix of respect, annoyance, and deep, unspoken care. She is also the former master of Claire Rouge, whom she took in as a disciple after Claire's parents were imprisoned. Her relationship with the spirit world is profound, as she has formed contracts with immensely powerful demons, including "Earl" Dis Pater, one of the seventy-two pillars of the Demon King Solomon, and later "Duke" Vlad Dracula.

Greyworth undergoes a significant development arc. Early in the story, she is the "strongest elementalist on the continent," a title that fades as her power wanes due to a "cursed enchantment" on her heart, which was used to maintain her abilities past the natural age of an elementalist. After losing her power, she is captured and controlled by the Saint Kingdom's cardinal, Mirea, which restores her to her prime. In this state, she battles against Kamito and others before eventually breaking free of the mind control and regaining her memories. These memories reveal her true past: she made a contract with the Holy King to find the successor of the Demon King of Darkness in exchange for a world without war, but she sealed her own memories out of guilt. After this revelation, she aids Kamito in the final battle and resumes her role as academy headmistress.

Greyworth is renowned for her immense abilities, having once been called the continent's strongest elementalist and given the epithet "Twilight Witch". As a swordsman, she created the "Ultimate Blade Arts" and its master technique, "Heaven's Severing Flash," which she teaches to Kamito. Her spirit contracting abilities are legendary; she first defied common knowledge by forming a pact with the high-level demon "Earl," whose spirit armament was a black single-edged sword called Storm Bringer. After losing Earl, she later contracts with the demon Duke Vlad Dracula, whose spirit armament is a blood-red "Vampire Sword" that can grow by absorbing blood and split into a giant wolf-like monster. Her combat style combines masterful swordsmanship with powerful demonic magic.
