Description
Mozuku Kunat, known in full as Mozuku Kunato, is a supporting character in the anime Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet Nine. She is introduced as the younger sister of Norio Kunato, a prominent and ambitious figure within Sidonia's military hierarchy. Mozuku is a soft-spoken individual who consistently presents herself as a loyal and trusting companion to her brother, acting as both a close friend and a devoted subordinate. Her unwavering loyalty to Norio is a defining trait in the early part of the story, and she often assists him in his various schemes and operations.
Mozuku's role in the narrative deepens when she and Norio explore the abandoned laboratory of the deceased scientist Ochiai. During this expedition, both are infected by mind-controlling parasites left behind by Ochiai. This infection subverts Mozuku's will, turning her into a pawn for the scientist's plans even after his apparent death. Under the parasite's influence, she becomes a cover for Ochiai's assistant and is used to further his hidden agenda. The brainwashed Mozuku is later involved in piloting the powerful hybrid organism Tsumugi Shiraui during key battles, serving as a controller and a link between the Chimera and the crew of Sidonia before Tsumugi gains enough autonomy to sortie without direct assistance.
Her motivations are largely driven by loyalty, first to her brother and later, involuntarily, to the parasitic entity that controls her. There is little indication of independent ambition; she exists primarily as a reflection of the influence of those around her. This makes her character arc one of loss of agency and eventual recovery. After Ochiai's influence is overcome, Mozuku's original personality is restored. She chooses to remain on Sidonia once the ship is repaired, implying a return to her earlier role or a new beginning within the community.
Key relationships include her bond with Norio Kunato, which is the central personal connection in her life, and her indirect interaction with Tsumugi Shiraui, whom she is forced to pilot. Her development is limited: she begins as a loyal follower, becomes a controlled puppet, and finally regains her free will. Notable abilities are not extensive; she is a competent Garde pilot capable of handling complex missions, though she does not stand out as a top-tier fighter compared to protagonists like Nagate Tanikaze. Her significance lies more in her vulnerability to manipulation and her role in advancing the plot surrounding Ochiai's schemes.
