Movie
Description
Hanabi Hyuga is the younger daughter of Hiashi Hyuga, the head of the prestigious Hyuga clan in Konohagakure, and the younger sister of Hinata Hyuga. From a very young age, Hanabi displayed a natural talent for the clan's unique fighting style that surpassed that of her older sister. Observing this potential, her father Hiashi determined that Hinata lacked the necessary confidence and edge to lead the clan, and subsequently designated Hanabi as the new heiress, training her to be the future head of the Hyuga main house. Unlike Hinata, who was considered a gentle and timid child, Hanabi was more confident, assertive, and possessed a strong will, never wanting to lose to anyone.
During the events of The Last: Naruto The Movie, Hanabi has grown into a capable young kunoichi who is deeply supportive of her sister's long-standing feelings for Naruto Uzumaki. She is shown playfully teasing Hinata and encouraging her to confess her love by giving him a scarf she had knitted, showing a more mischievous and caring side. Her role in the story, however, is primarily that of a driving force for the plot. She is targeted by the main antagonist, Toneri Otsutsuki, a descendant of the Sage of Six Paths' brother, who seeks to obtain a powerful dojutsu known as the Tenseigan. Toneri infiltrates Konohagakure and kidnaps Hanabi, intending to transplant her Byakugan, which he describes as being very pure, to complete his own power. Her capture becomes the central mission for Naruto and Hinata’s team, forcing them to journey to Toneri’s castle on the moon to rescue her.
The key relationships in Hanabi’s life are centered on her family. Her relationship with her father, Hiashi, is one of respect and rigorous training, as she is his chosen successor. Her bond with her sister Hinata is the most significant; while she once defeated Hinata in a sparring match that led to her becoming the heiress, she never stopped loving and admiring her sister. Hanabi often worried about Hinata's fixation on Naruto when they were children but eventually came to respect Naruto for changing her sister and cousin Neji for the better. Through this, she also came to see Naruto as a worthy partner for her sister. Her cousin Neji was another important figure in her life, and his death during the Fourth Great Ninja War had a notable impact on her, softening her previously serious demeanor.
In terms of development, the film presents a Hanabi who has evolved from the stoic and somewhat hardened child seen in flashbacks of the original series. She has become a fashionable and cheerful young woman, though she retains her inner strength and determination. The trauma of being kidnapped and having her eyes stolen does not break her spirit; after her eyes are retrieved by Hinata and restored, she quickly recovers her bright personality. The experience ultimately reinforces her supportive role within her family, as she is seen celebrating Naruto and Hinata’s wedding while holding a portrait of their late cousin, Neji.
As a member of the Hyuga clan, Hanabi possesses several notable abilities. She has the Byakugan, a kekkei genkai that grants her a near three-hundred-sixty-degree field of vision and the ability to see the chakra pathway system within a person’s body. She is highly skilled in the Gentle Fist, the clan’s signature combat style, which involves precisely injecting chakra into an opponent’s chakra network to cause internal damage. Her natural talent allowed her to hold her own against and defeat her older sister in a duel when they were children, an impressive feat given their age difference. Her abilities were so well-regarded that the main antagonist specifically sought her out for the exceptional purity of her Byakugan, marking it as a unique and powerful trait even within her gifted clan.
