Description
Goh's Grookey began its journey distributed via Team Rocket's Secret Rocket Prize Master, briefly held by Team Rocket Grunts. Demonstrating fierce independence, it slipped away one night, wandering until it found Cerise Laboratory in Vermilion City. The Pokémon entered Goh's room and clung to his sleeping arm. Upon waking, Goh discovered it and sought its original trainer, uncovering its Team Rocket origins. When Team Rocket tried to reclaim it, Grookey resisted fiercely, shattering its Team Rocket Poké Ball. It then chose Goh as its trainer by leaping into one of his empty Poké Balls, influenced by Goh's kindness in returning its cherished lost stick.

Grookey displays a playful, energetic, and mischievous nature. It frequently roughhouses, climbing onto heads—especially Goh's—and rhythmically tapping with its stick. While this initially caused friction, alarming Chloe's Eevee (though Grookey later apologized), it shows deep loyalty and protectiveness towards Goh and friends. The Pokémon is also stubborn and gluttonous, particularly when hungry. Preferring to stay outside its Poké Ball, it often travels perched on Goh's shoulder. Grookey possesses restorative abilities that aid plants and Grass-types, exemplified when it revitalized a dehydrated Bellsprout.

Its bond with Goh is central, built on mutual trust. Grookey actively participates in Goh's research and travels, journeying to regions like Hoenn and Unova. It developed a friendship with Chloe's Eevee after their initial discord and interacts positively with others like Ash's Pikachu. Grookey once helped calm Goh's Flabébé by playfully shaping Goh's hair with honey.

Key moments include aiding the "Plusle and Minun Handymen" with tasks involving Tauros and thwarting Team Rocket. It participated in a Pokémon interview about Cerise Laboratory and joined the search for Goh's missing Drizzile, showing empathy during Drizzile's emotional struggle. In Hoenn, it practiced for a Marine Pokémon Obstacle Course. Investigating a dried-up hot spring, Grookey was injured by an Absol but recovered post-conflict. It also witnessed Ash's World Coronation Series battles, like his victory against Iris in Unova.

During a crisis where Alternate World Team Rocket manipulated Dialga and Palkia, Grookey was temporarily devolved into an egg by temporal distortions, reverting to normal after Arceus restored balance. Grookey knows the moves Branch Poke and Wood Hammer and remained unevolved throughout its appearances. Notably, it is the first main character’s Grass-type starter previously owned by a villainous team and the first anime Pokémon to deliberately destroy its own Poké Ball; its gender is unconfirmed.
