Description
Piyotan, also written as Piyo-tan, is the zodiac spirit, or Eto-shin, representing the rooster in the anime Etotama. She is ranked tenth among the zodiac spirits and appears as a supporting character in the main series, its specials, and the later original net animation. Her assigned guardian territory is the Tohoku region of Japan, covering the six prefectures of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima.

Her defining trait comes from a Japanese proverb about birds forgetting things after taking three steps: after walking just three steps, she forgets whatever was most on her mind. However, while the specific memories disappear, she still retains a sense of the emotions and mood attached to them, so negative feelings gradually accumulate inside her even though she can no longer recall their cause. This quirk is treated as a kind of bird-brained limitation, but it also gives her a constant undercurrent of unexplained frustration and resentment.

In appearance, she has long, wavy light-blue hair that falls below her hips, sharp red eyes, and a tall, slender build. Her personality is calm and mature on the surface, and she tends to be strict and formal in how she carries herself. At the same time, she is quick to become annoyed, largely because of her short-term memory condition. She is especially irritated by the cat spirit Nyaatan, who repeatedly teases her about forgetting things, and Piyotan often responds by calling Nyaatan a stupid cat. Even when she forgets the specific incidents of their clashes, she keeps the lingering negative emotions, which leaves her with a vague but persistent dislike of Nyaatan.

As one of the established zodiac spirits, her role in the story is that of a recurring supporting figure within the group of Eto-musume, the spirit maidens tied to the zodiac signs. Like the others, she draws power from a type of human emotional energy called Sol/Lull, and when that energy gathers into her soul, known as her Etotama, she can shift between her adult mode, the form she uses to exist in the human world, and her pretty mode, a smaller form used for fighting in the Eto world. Her pretty mode takes the appearance of a chick. She also possesses a dedicated sacred tool called a Sol/Lull gear, named Raman, the Beloved Who Guides My Path, and her signature special move is the Self Navigation System.

Her most prominent relationship is with Nyaatan, and much of her on-screen presence revolves around the friction between them: Nyaatan provokes her, and Piyotan responds with strict, sharp irritation. Her interactions with the other zodiac spirits are comparatively calmer, though her memory problem shapes how she is treated within the group. Her personal development in the series stays relatively modest because of her supporting role, but her condition is portrayed with a consistent emotional consequence: she accumulates negative feelings that she cannot trace back to their origins, which makes her more than just a source of comedy. She must continue her duties as a ranked zodiac spirit while coping with a limitation that leaves her permanently unsettled without knowing why.
