Description
Kei Shidō is a secondary character who plays a pivotal role in the backstory of Miki Naoki. She is a second-year student at Megurigaoka Private High School and is identified as Miki Naoki's best friend and classmate. Her physical appearance includes shoulder-length chestnut-brown hair, which she often wears in a half-up style, and bright eyes, which are depicted as wine-red or a golden amber brown depending on the source. A defining attribute is her deep love for music; she is almost always seen carrying a portable CD player with her, a detail that becomes significant later in the narrative.

Initially, Kei is described as a cheerful, energetic, and talkative person who loves to joke and is always smiling. Her optimistic nature is a source of comfort for those around her, particularly Miki, and she maintains a positive outlook even in the face of the early stages of the zombie outbreak. Her role in the story is primarily established through Miki's memories of the early days of the apocalypse. On the day the outbreak begins, Kei and Miki are at a shopping mall together. As chaos erupts, they become trapped and manage to survive by hiding in the mall.

Their survival journey is fraught with emotional trials. At the mall, they initially join a larger group of survivors. During this period, Kei develops a deep, possibly romantic, attachment to the young man who leads their survivor group. This burgeoning relationship, however, ends in tragedy when the leader is bitten and turns into a zombie, inadvertently starting a fire that destroys their shelter and kills the rest of the group. Kei and Miki are the only two to escape the inferno. This traumatic loss has a profound and devastating impact on Kei's personality; the cheerful and optimistic girl fades away, and Miki notes that she never saw Kei smile again after that day.

Left alone with only Miki for company, hiding in a back room of the mall, Kei falls into a deep depression and becomes restless. She begins to question if simply staying alive in hiding is a worthwhile existence. Her motivation shifts from passive waiting to a desperate need for action. Convinced that no one will find them and that their supplies will eventually run out, she makes the difficult decision to leave their sanctuary and venture outside to find help, despite Miki's desperate pleas for her to stay. In her final moments with Miki, she hands over her cherished CD player and poses the haunting question, Is it really enough just to be alive? before departing, leaving her friend behind.

Following her departure, Kei’s fate becomes a central mystery. It is later revealed, through a radio broadcast picked up by another character, that someone using the initial K managed to reach a train station. The broadcaster reports having an injured leg and asks for help for herself and for a girl waiting at the top of a shopping mall, a clear reference to Miki. The broadcast stops the next day, and no further contact is made. Much later, when Miki and the School Living Club return to their high school, Miki encounters a zombie and is horrified to recognize it as the transformed Kei Shidō. Her story is a tragic illustration of the psychological toll of the apocalypse, highlighting the contrast between Miki's decision to endure in hiding and Kei's desperate choice to risk everything for a chance at a different outcome, ultimately leading to her infection and death. Her love for music, symbolized by the CD player she gives to Miki, remains her most notable trait.
