Description
Gaspard Vladi is a character from the anime High School DxD BorN, recognized as a member of Rias Gremory's peerage where he holds the position of a bishop. He is a beautiful boy with a slender build, standing 150 centimeters tall and weighing 40 kilograms. His most distinctive features are his golden blonde hair and large, ruby red eyes, which contribute to an androgynous appearance so delicate that he easily passes for a girl, a trait he embraces by having a fondness for wearing female clothing.
His personality is defined by extreme shyness and a deep-seated fear of other people. Gaspard suffers from severe social anxiety, to the point that he avoids human contact and prefers to spend his time hidden inside a large cardboard box, earning him the nickname the cardboard box vampire. He is a self-described hikikomori, or recluse, who dislikes crowded places and becomes easily flustered in social situations. Despite this crippling timidity, he has a very kind and gentle heart. He cares deeply for his friends and, as the story progresses, demonstrates a quiet but determined courage, finding the strength to fight and protect others even when he is terrified.
Gaspard's background is tragic and explains much of his fearful nature. He was born as a rare half-breed, the son of a human and a vampire. Because of his mixed blood, he was severely discriminated against and ostracized within the rigidly pure-blooded vampire society. After being driven from his home, he was eventually killed by vampire hunters. However, he was found and saved by Rias Gremory, who used a mutation bishop piece to reincarnate him as a devil, making him a member of her household. His unique nature as a half-breed also grants him the unusual ability of being a daywalker, meaning he can move freely in sunlight without being harmed, an immunity most vampires lack. He also has an aversion to the taste of blood and can sustain himself for long periods without drinking it.
His role within the story begins from a state of seclusion. Because he could not control his immense power, he was kept sealed within the old school building for his own safety and the safety of others, only being allowed to join the Occult Research Club after Rias gained enough influence to vouch for him. He serves as a crucial support member of the team, using his abilities for intelligence gathering and tactical advantages. He also brings a great deal of comic relief, as his terrified reactions and eccentric habits are often a source of amusement for his fellow club members.
Gaspard’s most significant relationship is with Issei Hyoudou. He looks up to Issei as an older brother and role model, greatly admiring his confidence and strength. Issei's encouragement and strict but caring guidance are instrumental in helping Gaspard come out of his shell and learn to control his powers. He holds deep loyalty and gratitude towards Rias Gremory, his king and savior. Within the peerage, he shares a close friendship with Koneko Toujou, who is also his classmate. He has a rivalry with Vali Lucifer and a deep, caring bond with his childhood friend, Valerie Tepes, with whom he shares a complicated past involving their vampire heritage.
