Description
Joel Raveau, often called Granny Joel or Aunty Joel by those who know her, is an elderly woman who runs a small cigarette shop in the city of Ergastulum. She is the grandmother of Constance Raveau and is a familiar face in the neighborhood, well-known to the local residents and underworld figures alike.

Joel is a petite woman in her seventies, standing at 154 cm tall, with gray hair and blue eyes that have seen much of the city's darker side. Her age does little to soften her demeanor; she has a sharp tongue and speaks her mind freely, never hesitating to chide those she believes are acting foolishly. Despite her gruff and sometimes irritable exterior, there are clear indications of a softer, more caring nature beneath the surface. For instance, she was genuinely worried about the young woman Alex running into unpleasant customers at her job, though she expressed this concern not through gentle words but by constantly telling Alex to find work elsewhere.

Joel runs her small tobacco shop as an independent business owner, and it serves as her base of operations and a familiar landmark in the area. She is a frequent customer of the Handymen service, particularly the duo of Nicolas Brown and Worick Arcangelo, whom she hires to deal with the thugs and hoodlums that loiter around her shop and frighten away her customers. Her relationship with Nic and Worick is casual and irreverent; she has known them long enough that she treats them without any special deference, in contrast to many others who handle the two men more cautiously.

She is present very early in the story when she hires the Handymen to drive off a group of troublemakers. After Nic finishes dealing with them, Joel pays the two men for their services and it is at that confrontation that she first encounters Alex, a woman in a dire situation. Joel's role is primarily that of a supportive figure in the community, one who watches over the neighborhood in her own way and provides a small measure of stability.

Joel's primary relationship is with her granddaughter, Constance, but she also acts as an informal guardian or neighbor to Alex, looking out for her even while maintaining a critical front. The strong implication from comments made by Constance is that Joel herself may have been a prostitute in her younger years, which would give her a deep and lived-in understanding of the dangerous life that many women in Ergastulum are forced to endure. This background likely informs her tough-love approach and her willingness to help others survive in a harsh environment.

Joel does not demonstrate any notable combat abilities or special physical prowess. Her strength lies in her experience, her sharp instincts, and the network of connections she has built over a long life in Ergastulum. She commands a certain level of respect simply by having survived for so long in a city dominated by violent gangs and mafia families. Her character does not undergo a dramatic development arc, but she remains a constant and reliable presence, one of the few genuinely stable and neutral figures in the series. Through her interactions with the younger characters, she provides a link to the city's past and offers a glimpse of how one might survive decades in a lawless place without losing all sense of humanity.
