Description
Gaston Brown is a minor but pivotal character in Gangsta, known primarily as the commander of the West Gate Mercenaries and the biological father of Nicolas Brown. His background is defined by cruelty and a cold, calculating nature. Unlike his son, who is a Twilight, Gaston is a normal human. He arranged for the birth of Nicolas by impregnating a Twilight prostitute, and after she gave birth, he killed her. Gaston’s primary motivation for fathering Nicolas was not familial love but utility; he intended to add the child to his mercenary group as a tool, viewing it as a more economical option than hiring a Tagged mercenary.

Gaston's personality is defined by a profound lack of humanity. He is described as cruel and calculating, treating his son and all Twilights as less than human and mere instruments to be used. This is starkly illustrated by his abusive treatment of Nicolas. He kept his son obedient and dependent by controlling his supply of Celebre, a vital drug for Twilights, and subjected him to constant physical abuse, with other members of the mercenary group also participating in this mistreatment. Gaston’s cruelty extended to his parting words to Nicolas, which were a command to not try to act human because he was a monster.

In the story, Gaston’s role is confined to the backstory of Nicolas and Worick Arcangelo. He initially assigned Nicolas to be a bodyguard for the young Worick, which inadvertently led to the deep bond the two protagonists would form. His key relationship is with his son, which is one of pure exploitation and abuse. There is no affection from Gaston towards Nicolas, only a desire to use his son’s abilities. His relationship with Worick is transactional; Worick ultimately paid Gaston to release Nicolas. This payment led directly to Gaston abandoning his son, which had a profound and damaging effect on Nicolas, leaving him in a state of shock despite the abusive nature of their relationship.

Gaston Brown undergoes no personal development in the series, serving purely as an antagonistic force from the past. His notable abilities lie in his role as a commander of a mercenary group, wielding authority and power through cruelty and manipulation rather than any physical prowess. His most significant act is his abandonment of Nicolas, an event that set the stage for the protagonists to forge their own path and deepened the themes of trauma, survival, and found family that permeate the series.
