Description
Akane Koumoto is the principal of Morobare High School, a position that belies her youthful appearance as a small girl with pink hair, green eyes, and a pair of horns protruding from her head. This appearance is a misleading facade, as she is in fact a demon who is several thousand years old and the great-great-grandmother of her fellow student, Akari Koumoto. Her true age and nature are not immediately obvious, leading most people to mistake her for an ordinary, if somewhat eccentric, student.

In terms of personality, Akane is the primary source of chaos and humor within her world. Despite her immense age and power, her behavior is overwhelmingly childish, mischievous, and energetic. She loves playing pranks on others, a trait she herself links to her nature as a demon, and her antics are often the catalyst for the most absurd and comedic situations in the story. Her philosophy regarding her own mischief is that a joke is only worthwhile if one is prepared to be punished for it, a credo she follows as she frequently faces comical and violent retribution for her actions, most often at the hands of her descendant, Akari. A significant driving force behind her behavior is an insatiable addiction to sweets and candy; she can become uncontrollably agitated or violent when her supply runs out.

Her primary motivation for her role at the school is not merely to cause trouble, but to fulfill a long-held goal of enabling coexistence between humans and supernatural beings. Through her manipulations and power, she has ensured that vampires, aliens, werewolves, and other non-human students can attend Morobare High School without being discovered. This mission stems from her past, as she was once the homeroom teacher for the parents of the vampire Yoko Shiragami and regrets failing to protect their secret. In the present, she acts as a behind-the-scenes orchestrator, watching over the romantic entanglements and friendships that form between the human and non-human students, hoping for a better outcome this time.

Her key relationships are defined by her dual nature as a trickster and a guardian. She shares a particularly volatile and humorous dynamic with her great-great-granddaughter, Akari, who is one of the few beings that can truly frighten and discipline her. Akane delights in teasing Akari and interfering with her romantic life, but her schemes almost always backfire, leading to a physical punishment that she meekly accepts. With Yoko Shiragami, she has a friendship that borders on a rivalry, as Yoko refuses to treat her as an elder and calls her by her first name, leading to frequent squabbles. Despite this, Akane is deeply invested in protecting Yoko. She also has a connection with the normal human student Asahi Kuromine, who is one of the few people who treats her with respect as the principal, and she offers him genuine guidance when he is uncertain about his future career path.

Throughout the story, Akane undergoes a notable, if temporary, development. When one of her horns is broken by Akari as punishment, she loses all of her demonic mischief and becomes a genuinely kind, mature, and unsettlingly normal person. Her acquaintances find this transformation deeply disturbing, highlighting how integral her chaotic personality is to her identity. After a few days, her horn grows back, and she reverts to her original personality with no memory of the interim period. In the distant past, flashbacks reveal she was once a much more mature-looking and elegant woman, and her current diminutive, childish form seems to be a result of a whim she had centuries ago, having grown attached to a life where humans and other beings live together in close quarters.

As a demon, Akane possesses a wide array of notable supernatural abilities, including the power to cast illusions, create tangible physical clones of herself, use clairvoyance to observe distant events, and employ telekinesis. Despite this immense power, she rarely uses it for anything truly sinister, preferring to employ her abilities for tasteless pranks, spying on students, or indulging her own whims. In a surprising display of demonic principles, she is utterly faithful to any contract she agrees to, upholding her end of a bargain with absolute seriousness even if the terms seem trivial. For all her power and age, she has a few notable fears, including a strong phobia of ghosts and a dread of going to the dentist.
