Description
Loewen is a character from the anime series Dance with Devils. He is a supernatural being who appears primarily in the form of a small Pomeranian dog, though he can also assume a human appearance. In his human form, he has short blue hair and blue eyes, and he is of a youthful, slender build. His true nature is that of a cerberus, a three-headed hellhound from the demon realm, who serves the powerful demon lord Maksis.
Loewen's background is tied to both the demon aristocracy and the human world. He originally belonged to the household of Rem Kaginuki, a member of the Arlond family and the student council president at Shikō Academy. For a time, he acted as the family's pet and watchdog. However, his true loyalty lies elsewhere. At some point, he betrayed the Arlond family and began serving Maksis, a demon king who had lost much of his power. Loewen's primary motivation throughout the story is to recover the Forbidden Grimoire, a magical book that would allow him to restore Maksis to his former strength. He is unwavering in his devotion to Maksis and works behind the scenes to advance his master's interests.
Personality-wise, Loewen can appear laid-back and easygoing, especially when in his dog form. He is often seen lounging on the student council's couch, giving the impression of a harmless, lazy pet. This demeanor serves as a cover for his true intentions. In reality, he is cunning, patient, and highly focused on his goal. He does not openly display aggression, but he is willing to deceive and manipulate those around him to achieve his objectives. Despite his small and cute appearance, he is a capable and dangerous entity.
In the story, Loewen plays a supporting but pivotal role. He is introduced as Rem's pet dog and is frequently present in the student council room, observing the interactions between the main characters. As the conflict over the Grimoire escalates, his true allegiance is gradually revealed. He acts as a spy and a tool for Maksis, gathering information and positioning himself to seize the Grimoire when the opportunity arises. Although he is not a frontline combatant like some other characters, his knowledge of the demon world and his connection to Maksis make him a key figure in the overarching power struggle.
Key relationships include his bond with Maksis, whom he serves with absolute loyalty, and his former association with Rem. He shows little attachment to the other student council members or the protagonist, Ritsuka Tachibana, viewing them only as means to an end. His interactions are often marked by a calm and slightly distant demeanor, as he keeps his true motives hidden.
Loewen undergoes little visible character development in the main series, as his role is largely that of an agent carrying out a preordained mission. However, his reveal as a servant of Maksis adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, highlighting how appearances can be deceptive.
Notable abilities include his shape-shifting between a small dog and a human, allowing him to move unnoticed and gather intelligence. As a cerberus, he possesses supernatural strength and senses, though this is not extensively showcased in the anime. His primary asset is his cunning and patience, rather than raw power. He also has a deep understanding of demonic magic, which he uses to aid Maksis's plans.
