Description
Casval Rem Deikun, also known by the alias Édouard Mass, is the birth name of the character most widely recognized as Char Aznable. He is introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin as the son of Zeon Zum Deikun, a prominent advocate for the independence of space colonies who died under suspicious circumstances when Casval was a child. Following his father's death, Casval and his younger sister, Artesia Som Deikun, are forced to flee for their lives, believing the rising Zabi family was responsible for their father’s demise and now seeks to eliminate his heirs.

Casval’s early personality is forged in the crucible of this tragedy. As a child, he displays a maturity and intensity far beyond his years, with a deep-seated hatred for the Zabi family that is constantly reinforced by the family’s loyal retainer, Jimba Ral. Unlike his more innocent sister, Casval is quick to anger, calculating, and willing to resort to violence, as seen when he commandeers a military vehicle’s weaponry during their escape from Side 3. This experience does not soften him; instead, it hardens his resolve, and the death of his mother years later fuels a transformation into an increasingly cold, brooding, and ruthless individual driven by a singular goal of vengeance.

His primary motivation throughout The Origin is the systematic destruction of the Zabi family, who have seized control of the Principality of Zeon. To infiltrate their ranks and get close enough to exact his revenge, Casval must assume a new identity. Seeking to enroll in the Zeon military academy, he befriends Char Aznable, a young man who bears a striking resemblance to him, the only difference being the color of their eyes. When Casval deduces that assassins sent by Kycilia Zabi will target his flight, he cleverly engineers a swap, giving his enemy the chance to kill the real Char while Casval adopts his name and identity to enroll as a cadet, hiding his blue eyes behind a mask or visor.

In his role at the academy and his early military career under the name Char Aznable, his motivations remain a complex mixture of revenge and a deep-seated desire for power and recognition. While driven by a personal vendetta, he also cultivates relationships that serve his purposes, most notably befriending Garma Zabi, the naive and privileged son of the family he intends to destroy. His actions, such as leading the "Dawn Rebellion" and pushing Garma to take charge, demonstrate a natural talent for manipulation, strategy, and charismatic leadership. He uses these skills to advance his own position while subtly undermining the Zabi regime from within.

Key relationships are central to his development. His bond with his sister, Artesia (later known as Sayla Mass), is one of the few threads connecting him to his original identity, though his quest for revenge ultimately creates a rift between them. His manufactured friendship with Garma Zabi is a tool, but The Origin hints at a grudging respect for Garma’s earnestness, a sentiment that does not stay his hand when the time comes to orchestrate Garma’s downfall. His relationship with Lalah Sune, a young woman with powerful Newtype abilities whom he rescues, is also significant, as it introduces him to a deeper, more philosophical understanding of human potential that will later shape his ideology.

Casval Rem Deikun possesses notable abilities from a young age. He is exceptionally intelligent, a natural strategist, and a brilliant pilot, demonstrating an almost innate talent for mobile suit combat even as a child. His cold and calculating nature allows him to plan years ahead, manipulating people and events with patience. This period of his life establishes the core traits of the legendary "Red Comet"—his charisma, his tactical genius, his immense piloting skill, and the deep, festering core of vengeance that drives him. His development in The Origin is the tragic forging of a villain and a hero, showing how a pained and intelligent child is shaped by political conspiracy and personal loss into the masked ace pilot who will become one of the most iconic figures in the Universal Century.
