Description
Born as Artesia Som Deikun, she is the daughter of Zeon Zum Deikun, the founder of the philosophy that led to the creation of the Principality of Zeon, and the younger sister of Casval Rem Deikun, who would later become the infamous Char Aznable. Following the mysterious death of her father and the rise of the Zabi family to power, a young Artesia and her brother were forced to flee their home in Side 3. With the help of family friend Jimba Ral, they were sent to Earth to live under the protection of the wealthy Don Teabolo Mass. To hide from the Zabi family's purge of their father's loyalists, Artesia was renamed Sayla Mass, while her brother took the name Édouard Mass. This period of peace was brief, as Jimba Ral's plotting against the Zabis led to further danger, forcing the siblings to move again, this time to the Texas Colony under the watch of Roger Aznable. After a series of tragedies, including the apparent death of her brother in a shuttle explosion, Sayla decided to pursue a more peaceful path, moving to Side 7 to study medicine and work as a medical volunteer.

Sayla Mass is defined by a compassionate and caring personality, a trait that led her to a life of healing rather than war. She is gentle and thoughtful, a stark contrast to her brother, who was consumed by revenge. Despite this gentle nature, she possesses a strong will and a brave heart. When forced into a combat role, she proves to be resourceful and capable, willing to take risks to protect others or to seek the truth. Her core motivation is not revenge or glory, but a desire to protect her newfound family and find a sense of belonging. She struggles with her own identity as the heir to a disgraced political leader, but ultimately chooses to forge her own path, separate from the violent legacy of her father and the obsessive vengeance of her brother.

Sayla's role in the story begins when she is caught in the Zeon attack on Side 7. She evacuates onto the warship White Base as a refugee. Due to a severe shortage of trained personnel, she is quickly assigned as the ship's communications officer. It is during this attack that she has a fateful encounter with a masked Zeon pilot, Char Aznable, and recognizes him as her presumed-dead brother, Casval. This discovery becomes a central emotional thread for her character. She later takes a more active role, commandeering the prototype Gundam mobile suit in a reckless attempt to confront Zeon forces and learn more about her brother. Though this act lands her in solitary confinement, it also demonstrates her piloting potential. Subsequently, she is made an alternate pilot for the Gundam and later the G-Fighter (Core Booster), proving her skills in numerous battles as a member of the White Base crew.

Her most significant relationships are with her brother, Char Aznable, and with Amuro Ray, the primary pilot of the Gundam. Her bond with Char is fraught with pain, loss, and a fundamental disagreement on how to confront their past. While he tries to push her away from the war and protect her, she refuses to abandon her post, choosing to stand with the crew of the White Base. He sends her gold to start a new life, which she instead donates to her comrades, solidifying that she considers them her true family. Her relationship with Amuro Ray is one of mutual respect and growing closeness. They fight alongside each other, and she becomes one of the few people who can truly understand the pressures he faces as a young soldier and a burgeoning Newtype. In some adaptations of the story, this bond deepens into a romantic relationship.

Throughout the One Year War, Sayla undergoes significant development. She transforms from a civilian medical student into a combat-tested soldier and mobile suit pilot. Her initial naivety about the conflict is replaced by a hardened resolve, yet she never loses her fundamental compassion. A pivotal moment occurs when she encounters Ramba Ral, a Zeon officer and son of Jimba Ral. He recognizes her as Artesia, and his loyalty to her family leads to his death, a tragedy that deeply affects her. In the final battle at A Baoa Qu, as depicted in The Origin, she pilots a GM into combat. After being shot down, she is captured by Zeon forces but turns the tables by revealing her true identity as Artesia Som Deikun. This revelation inspires a Zeon security company to defect from the Zabi family and pledge their loyalty to her, making her a symbolic leader of the Deikun faction. She ultimately intervenes in the final duel between Amuro and her brother, allowing them both to survive. After the war, she chooses to step away from the political stage and returns to her original calling, establishing a foundation to care for war orphans and living as an investor.

Notable abilities include her skills as a mobile suit pilot. Though not initially a soldier, she demonstrates a natural aptitude for piloting, quickly learning to handle the Gundam and other Federation mobile weapons. She becomes a capable and effective combat pilot, able to hold her own in major battles. Sayla also begins to exhibit signs of Newtype abilities, which are characterized by heightened spatial awareness and empathic connections with others, particularly Amuro. However, she never fully develops or relies on these powers to the extent that others do, preferring to maintain her humanity and personal convictions over becoming a pure Newtype warrior.
